POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under general direction of the Medical Director of Health Services and the Executive Director of University Health and Counseling Services, the staff physician will be responsible for providing age specific, developmentally appropriate clinical services to students and other members of the university community in an integrated health and wellness model.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Provide direct care to patients in University Health and Counseling Services (UH&CS) clinical settings including primary care, women’s health, mental health, allergy, travel, immunization, public health, campus outreach and occupational health. Identify and respond effectively to the unique needs of each population. Provide quality care in a manner, which enhances patient satisfaction and respects all aspects of an individual patient’s identity and promotes the health of the student population. (60%)
  2. Assess patient needs, provide appropriate medical care and referrals, document all clinical activities promptly in the electronic health record, and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. Serve as a clinical resource for nurse practitioners and nurses. (20%)
  3. Assess employee-related health care needs as related to their job functions (public health, immunizations, pre-exposure screening, post-exposure care, monitoring programs). (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Collaborate with peers and other members of the health care team in clinical conferences and small group consultation. (5%)
  2. Participate in wellness, health promotion and outreach programming to promote campus wide health and wellness initiatives. (5%)
  3. Perform other duties as assigned. (<1%)

CONTACTS

Department: Continuous contact with medical director of health services and the director of clinical operations. Continuous contact with professional and support staff of UH&CS for scheduling, clinical consultation and collaborative work in an integrated model.

University: Occasional contact with university colleagues to refer students to university resources such as disability resources, student success, dean of students, academic deans, athletics, etc.

External: Moderate contact with external peers to manage student referrals to outside community health care providers such as University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Metro Health Medical Center. Occasional contact with public health authorities in outbreak and emergency situations.

Students: Continuous contact with students to provide direct health services to students presenting with a range of health and wellness needs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct administrative supervisory responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Prefer 5 years post-residency primary care experience, experience with adolescent and young adult populations, and/or experience within a university setting. Must possess physician experience in direct patient care.

Education/ Licensing: Medical degree from an accredited medical school. Board Certification in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or Family Medicine preferred. Holds or is eligible for a current State of Ohio Medical License and holds a current DEA License.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including: respect for all aspects of an individual’s identity, ability to resolve conflict, clear personal and professional boundaries, and ability to work collegially and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team process.
  2. Experience using an electronic health record to document all clinical encounters using appropriate medical terminology. Maintain accurate and complete records; document patient condition, active problems, treatments, medication and outcomes promptly.
  3. Adhere to all safety policies and procedures of the university, and keep up with new trends in safety and compliance with national standards for safe care.
  4. Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage time appropriately.
  5. Active listening to facilitate patient care along with excellent communication skills with patient service focus.
  6. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face. Ability to work collegially and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team process.
  7. Ability to meet consistent attendance. Dependability and good work habits. 
  8. Knowledge of and adherence to relevant laws and professional standards regarding professional ethics and privacy. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical health and counseling clinic environment on a university campus. The employee may be exposed to blood and body fluids. Personal protective equipment will be provided. Full-time professional staff are exempt from overtime. May be required to participate in on-call schedule or be on site evenings or weekends as clinical demands warrant.
