 NCI is seeking an exceptional and visionary leader to serve as the Associate Director for Informatics and Data Science (Associate Director), Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT). The NCI is the principal agency of the Federal Government for cancer research and for carrying out the National Cancer Program. CBIIT accelerates cancer research by empowering scientists and clinicians with the data and informatics tools they need to drive their research and ensures research data are optimally managed and the right technologies are available when needed. CBIIT partners with NCI programs and cancer researchers to meet the informatics, data, and information technology needs of the community today. The Associate Director, CBIIT serves as the principal advisor to the CBIIT Director and NCI senior leadership on ensuring the required clinical and discovery informatics infrastructure needs are met; promoting and implementing biomedical informatics solutions, information technologies, and analytics activities; and managing major data sharing and integration initiatives. The Associate Director has the following responsibilities:

  • leads diverse, highly complex scientific programs involving bioinformatics and data science;
  • oversees three highly complex informatics and data science programs that: (1) support the NCI’s clinical trials and clinical trials reporting, precision medicine, imaging informatics, semantic infrastructure, and translational research; (2) develop and manage the NCI Cancer Research Data Commons, providing secure access to data generated by NCI-funded programs and; (3) provide advanced computational genomics data analysis, scientific consultation, and training to support intramural and extramural NCI scientific communities;
  • supervises significant resources and management of scientific contracts involving clinical and translational research informatics and data science; and
  • serves as the primary advisor on the research and development of informatics and data science technologies and products that support critical cancer and biomedical research programs of the Institute.

The successful candidate will be an innovative leader on a broad range of evolving biomedical informatics, data sciences and related emerging technologies as applied to cancer research in NCI’s complex portfolio. The successful candidate will also have a vision for informatics and data science to transform and improve cancer research.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must possess a doctoral level degree (e.g. Ph.D. or M.D.) in a biomedical science with demonstrated scientific experience spanning multiple disciplines such as biochemistry, molecular biology, and emerging technologies such as genomics, proteomics, biomarker discovery, biomedical informatics, and clinical informatics.
  • Extensive experience in the application of concepts, practices, requirements, and policies of biomedical informatics, data science and related emerging technologies to cancer research.
  • Experience developing data infrastructure, platforms, and knowledge-based solutions; recommending data-driven solutions using predictive modeling and analytics; coordinating biomedical informatics and emerging technology programs; and designing databases to manage data from emerging technologies.
  • Leadership experience in managing a highly visible national biomedical informatics and data science research and development programs.
  • Leadership experience in supervising staff, managing multi-million-dollar budgets, and overseeing complex biomedical informatics contracts.
  • Experience in leading multidisciplinary groups in developing biomedical informatics and data science strategies and initiatives.
  • Experience in establishing successful partnerships with a broad range of agencies and non-federal organizations.
  • Experience in establishing and implementing guiding principles and policies for data aggregation, federation, integration, and harmonization.
  • Experience serving as a manager of complex cancer biomedical informatics and data science programs.

The successful candidate will be appointed under the Title 42(f) authority at a salary commensurate with experience.
