Job Description

The Critical Care Medicine Department (CCMD), Clinical Center (CC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) is nationally known in the fields of sepsis, blood safety, HIV/AIDS, HCV, pulmonary diagnostics, Pneumocystis pneumonia, and pulmonary hypertension.  We are seeking an outstanding tenure track physician with strong leadership credentials to develop a program that investigates the clinical epidemiology of critical illness, focusing on information that can be derived from large databases.  The position will be supported with independent resources commensurate with experience and programmatic needs. In addition, the NIH provides strong support for faculty development of early-career scientists.

The NIH is the nation's foremost federally funded biomedical research institution. The NIH CC is the 200-bed hospital in which NIH intramural research protocols are conducted. The CCMD supports the mission of the NIH’s world class intramural research program. CCMD is located on the main campus of the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland.


A research portfolio with high impact publications in the fields of critical care is required. A research focus on highly resistant bacterial pathogens is preferred. 

The applicant must have an M.D. or equivalent degree and must be board certified or board eligible in critical care medicine so that they can perform as an attending physician in an intensive care unit for a wide variety of complex medical and surgical patients regularly. The incumbent must be capable of working as a team with critical care fellows and nurse practitioners and must be an effective ICU team leader. Tenure Track Investigators in the CCMD typically provide 6-8 weeks of in-patient service. 

The incumbent is expected to contribute outstanding teaching and mentorship for critical care and infectious disease trainees and colleagues. Such activities include lecturing, writing, and one-on-one instruction in critical care, infectious disease, and clinical epidemiology.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with research experience and accomplishments, and a full Civil Service package of benefits (including health insurance, life insurance, retirement and a Thrift Savings Plan) is available.  This position is not restricted to U.S. citizens.  This position is subject to a background investigation.
