Position Description:

The Department of Emergency Medicine of the Pennsylvania Hospital seeks an exceptionally talented candidate for a Clinical Associate or Full Clinical Professor position who will also serve as the Medical Director for Clinical Operations.

The candidate should be an expert in leading edge leadership, management and operations principles, and be knowledgeable about public policy, finance and billing and regulations as they affect clinical operations. The candidate should have strong quantitative skills and proven proficiency in analyzing data to optimize performance. The candidate should have a track record of successfully managing teams and projects. The Medical Director will report directly to the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and be responsible for the development and implementation of strategic, financial, and operational plans for the patient care mission in conjunction with the Department Chair. The Medical Director shall provide oversight, direction and leadership for the clinical operations of the Department. The Medical Director will oversee departmental quality improvement, performance improvement, customer service, finance, medical informatics and disaster preparedness.

The Department of Emergency Medicine manages emergency services at Pennsylvania Hospital-(PAH) and Penn Urgent Care South Philadelphia with a combined annual census projected to be over 55,000 this year. The Department collaborates with the Emergency Departments at:  the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian, Lancaster General Hospital, Chester County Hospital and Princeton Medical Center. Penn Medicine is a world class academic institution with superb clinical facilities and programs, the number three ranked medical school in the nation, and a rich and collegial research and teaching environment.

There are 19 faculty (14.5 clinical fte’s) and 6 APP’s in our Emergency Department and we teach interns, residents and Penn medical students.  Our nurses are engaged professionals who have recently been awarded the Lantern award for excellence in Emergency Care.  The Department has active collaborations with other University of Pennsylvania Centers and schools such as the Penn Medicine Center for Healthcare Innovation.

Requirements:

Applicants must have an M.D. or D.O. degree and excellent qualifications in education and clinical care.

Candidates should be residency-trained and board-certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, and have demonstration of operational improvements and innovations as an emergency department Associate Medical Director or Medical Director of Clinical Operations.
