SLEEP MEDICINE PHYSICIAN WITH FACULTY APPOINTMENT

VA MEDICAL CENTER, DETROIT, MI

The John D. Dingell VA Medical Center at Detroit, Michigan, is seeking a BC/BE full-time and/or part-time Sleep Physician and we invite you to consider this position, providing care for our veterans.  As a Sleep Physician the duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Attending in the sleep clinics and the tele-sleep medicine program
• Ordering and interpreting complex in-lab and limited channel home sleep studies
• Performing inpatient sleep consultations
• Performing evaluative testing and readings of PAP/sleep related disorder testing
• Participating as a faculty member in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited sleep medicine fellowship program
• Teaching and supervising advanced practice providers, sleep fellows, residents, ancillary staff and multidisciplinary teams
• Participating in the clinical sleep quality improvement initiatives
• Maintaining, strategizing, and expanding clinical initiatives including tele-medicine and the Remote Veterans Apnea Management Program (REVAMP), in collaboration with the section chief
• Participating in the clinical sleep research program
• Collaborating with the Behavioral Sleep Medicine program, ENT and Dental sleep medicine

You should be veteran focused, an effective role model, innovative thinker, and  demonstrate clinical excellence, with exceptional interpersonal, teaching and communication skills.

You will be expected to participate in training sleep fellows, as well as precepting residents, medical students and other trainees in the field of Sleep Medicine. In addition to an active clinical practice you will be responsible for supporting an academic environment oriented to fellows and medicine residents with strong emphasis on education, continuous quality and process improvement and research and, you must  qualify for an academic appointment at Wayne State University which includes board eligibility/board certification.  

The John D. Dingell VAMC Sleep-Wake Disorders Center is an AASM-accredited sleep center with multiple sleep clinics and a state-of-the art sleep laboratory with 12 beds. The Sleep Center includes an active behavioral sleep medicine program and with Dental Sleep and ENT-Sleep specialists. The ENT specialists and sleep center collaborate on providing sleep apnea therapy via hypoglossal nerve stimulation. The Center serves as a referral center for the region’s VA medical facilities (Battle Creek VA and Saginaw VA) and provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for Veterans via face-to-face clinics as well as via video-teleconferencing with remote VA sites. 

The Center also co-sponsors an ACGME-accredited Sleep Fellowship program in conjunction with Wayne State University. The VA sleep program has a strong research track with opportunities for conducting clinical research in management of sleep apnea, sleep apnea and COPD overlap syndrome, and research into control of breathing in individuals with opioid use and spinal cord injury.  The medical center serves as a major WSU-SOM site for pre-and post-graduate education in medicine, surgery and psychiatry. A growing basic and clinical research program at Detroit VA now exceeds $4 million in annual VA funding. 

This VAMC is a recently-constructed, state-of-the-art 108 bed tertiary care medical, surgical, and psychiatric facility with an 84-bed nursing home care unit, a 50-bed off-site Domiciliary, and two community-based outpatient clinics.  Over 1,900 employees provide dedicated service to Veterans from throughout southeastern Michigan and we are in the heart of Detroit's cultural and medical center that includes museums, seven hospitals, and Wayne State University.

Requirements include:

• US Citizenship of the United States (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens)
• Board Certification Board certified or eligible in Sleep Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
• Residency/Fellowship. Completion of an accredited residency/fellowship in Sleep Medicine.
• Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia with no history or suspension or revocation
