The role of the Lead Palliative Medicine (PM) Physician is to provide clinical care for complex, palliative-appropriate patients across settings (inpatient, outpatient, and community-based settings), maintain clinical and administrative supervision of PM providers, as well as provide medical leadership and expertise within an interdisciplinary team. In this role, the Lead PM Physician, in collaboration with interdisciplinary team members, will provide complex palliative care for at-risk patients, patients requiring symptom management and supportive care, and developing goals of care and treatment plans.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provides medical consultation services in Palliative Medicine in various settings, including inpatient, outpatient, community-based settings (nursing homes, assisted living, personal residence), and telemedicine.
  • Leads the development and implementation of standards of care related to the management and evaluation of palliative patients in collaboration with the care team members.
  • Collaborates in the development of multidisciplinary goals of care planning for palliative patients.
  • Provides supervision of Palliative Medicine providers and serves as an expert clinical resource and mentor to medical, nursing and ancillary staff who care for palliative patients.
  • Assists the Chair of Medicine and interdisciplinary team with elevating the quality and performance of AAMC Palliative Medicine services. This includes monitoring and complying with quality metrics including, but not limited to, the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) standards and Joint Commission Advanced Certification for Palliative Care.
  • Participates in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Participates in the clinical and program development of the AAMC Palliative Medicine Program.
  • Participates in the Graduate Medical Education program at AAMC’s acute and ambulatory settings.

Minimum Required Education: Graduate of an accredited school of medicine or osteopathy (MD or DO degree).

Minimum Required Experience: Completion of an approved American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) residency.

Required License/Certification: Board Eligible or Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Current state license (or willing to obtain) to practice medicine, DEA, and CDS
