Residency Program Director

Department of Anesthesiology - Medical College of Wisconsin

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is currently seeking national nominations for the role of Residency Program Director of the Department of Anesthesiology. In this highly visible leadership role, the Residency Program Director will be responsible for overseeing and managing the program. The Department of Anesthesiology is comprised of 153 faculty, 22 Anesthesiologist Assistants, 79 staff members (25 administrative, 28 clinical, 26 research), and approximately 100 residents and fellows who train in our Department annually. Forty-five students are en route to become CAAs in our Master of Science in Anesthesia Program. There are also 63 CRNAs practicing at Froedtert Hospital as part of the Anesthesia Care Team. We primarily practice at five hospitals, with several additional locations in clinics and ambulatory surgery centers. As a team, we continue to provide exemplary patient care and education while pursuing research that will improve the health of the communities that we serve.

Program Director Roles and Responsibilities:        

In accordance with the requirements of the ACGME, the Residency Program Director will:

  • Oversee the entirety of the residency program and all departmental fellowship programs (cardiac anesthesia, intensive care, pediatric anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, regional anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, simulation and pain management). 
  • Enhance communication with residents, faculty, advanced practice professionals, the GMEC, and the ACGME.
  • Build upon relationships with subspecialties, administrative areas, and the Medical College to enhance the education of our trainees and students.
  • Dedicate at least 5 years to this role in order to build a successful and sustainable program.
  • Model outstanding professionalism, high quality patient care, excellence in education, and a scholarly approach to work.
  • Maintain responsibility, authority, and accountability for: administration and operations, compliance with all applicable program requirements, teaching and scholarly activity, resident recruitment and selection, evaluation and promotion of residents, and disciplinary action. 
  • Demonstrate outstanding academic achievements in anesthesiology, including publications, the development of educational programs, and the conduct of research.

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Completion of residency and fellowship a minimum of three years before applying for the role.
  • At least three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience.
  • Certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology, current medical licensure and active medical staff appointment

About the Department of Anesthesiology

The Department boasts 153 faculty, 22 faculty Anesthesiologist Assistants and 79 staff members. Approximately 100 residents and fellows train in our department annually. We have a categorical residency with 18 residents/year, a combined anesthesiology/pediatrics residency and a combined anesthesiology/medicine residency – each with a maximum of 1 resident/year. An additional forty-five students are enrolled in our Master of Scoence Program and en route to become CAAs, 14 of whom will graduate this coming December as the second class to finish our MSA program. The first class of DNP CRNA students enrolled at Marquette University began their clinical rotations at Froedtert Hospital in January of 2019.There are now 63 CRNAs practicing at Froedtert and more will be joining our care team as our numbers of anesthetizing locations increases. We primarily practice at five hospitals, with several additional locations in clinics and ambulatory surgery centers.
