The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time, assistant professor faculty member to join the Heinz Prechter Bipolar Research Program, an endowed, internationally-acclaimed research enterprise with projects spanning molecular, clinical, and population health approaches.  The successful candidate will have expertise in bipolar disorder both from the research and clinical perspective who is enthusiastic to join an inter-disciplinary research group representing several schools within the University of Michigan.

Research Activity: 

This position is centered around longitudinal research projects in bipolar disorder. The successful candidate will have a passion towards identifying mechanisms (etiology) that drive the bipolar phenotype and/or use the longitudinal patterns from multidisciplinary research to model outcomes of disease to develop predictive models. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop independent projects within the Prechter Program that will lead to extramural funding. There will be strong support to facilitate grant applications according to the level and needs of the candidate.

The successful candidate will participate as a full member in a vibrant interdisciplinary research group currently conducting studies relevant to biological and psychological mechanisms behind bipolar disorder as well as predicting outcomes. The Prechter Bipolar Research program has collaborative studies with multiple departments in the UM Medical School and across the Schools of the University of Michigan. This position will report through the Director of the Prechter Bipolar Research Program.

Clinical Activity:

Clinical activity will be primarily outpatient based and centered around the weekly bipolar clinic at the UM Department of Psychiatry.

Educational Activities:

The successful candidate will join in a program of educational activities with a team of dedicated clinical and basic science educators who provide a full range of teaching to a broad array of health professionals. Interactive educational opportunities include medical students, residents, fellows, post-doctoral trainees, and a wide range of students and trainees throughout the University of Michigan. The applicant will be welcomed and offered opportunities to share their expertise in core curriculum development/delivery, medical student teaching, Journal Clubs, Evidence-Based Medicine Seminars, and Grand Rounds.

Administration:

The successful candidate will be expected to attend Faculty Meetings within the Department of Psychiatry, at minimum this will include Academic Staff, All-Staff, Physicians Meetings, and other administrative meetings deemed necessary by their reporting supervisor. Relevant training on all elements of medical records and research administrative matters (e.g. IRB) will be provided.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must hold MD or MD/PhD or equivalent and is required. Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan is necessary. Completion of a residency in Psychiatry is required, and the candidate must be board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry. Applicants must have demonstrated promise for an academic career that emphasizes clinical care, teaching and administration. Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary and be an active member in good standing of the University of Michigan Medical Staff.
