Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting pre-placement, post-offer and other medical examinations, medical surveillance evaluations, medical screening for the health effects of occupational health hazards and address urgent non-work-related medical conditions that may arise in the workplace.
  • Gaining familiarity with LADWP’s policies and practices that impact OHS for example:  in-house drug/alcohol testing, and Drug Recognition Evaluation (DRE).  Performing drug/alcohol recognition evaluations in compliance with the Department’s Drug and Alcohol Policy and/or Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. May also serve as a Medical Review Officer (MRO).
  • Performing medical surveillance evaluations. The Department satisfies OSHA requirements for medical surveillance of employees who may be exposed to asbestos, lead, noise, dust, fumes, etc. In addition, support is provided by a contracted vendor which performs required exams in the field. However, all the results from the examinations are reviewed and compiled by in-house staff.
  • Participating in weekly disability file evaluations in the absence of the Medical Director who is the medical consultant to the Department’s Disability Plan. This involves review of diagnosis, treatment plan and determining appropriateness for disability status.
  • Treating occupational injuries in compliance with the California State Workers’ Compensation medical guidelines. The Department tries to refer as many on-the-job injuries/illnesses in-house. This involves the diagnosis and treatment of such injuries/illnesses. Patients can be referred to specialists as appropriate.
  • Coordinating and reviewing the work of per diem contract physician performing similar clinical provider duties.
  • Assisting the Medical Director in occupational health administration as necessary and may act for the Medical Director during absences.

 

Requirements

  • M.D. or D.O. Degree; and
  • Board Certification in Occupational Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; and
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Occupational Medicine; and
  • License to practice medicine in the State of California; and
  • Current state and Federal DEA certification; and
  • Current Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) medical examiner certification; and
  • Certification by a recognized agency as a Medical Review Officer (MRO) for the federal DOT testing program; and
  • Valid California driver’s license; and
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, workplace health and safety concepts; and
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and collaboration skills.

 

This is an exempt, at-will position. The individual appointed to this position will not accrue any civil service tenure, contractual employment rights, or due process rights. The incumbent may be removed without any finding of cause by the hiring authority.

Monthly Salary Range: $15,235.44 to $16,084.56
