Organizational Unit Overview

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center which is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health. VMC is a Level I trauma Center with 58 ED beds and a dedicated 16 bed Children’s ED. It is located in the eastern part of North Carolina in Greenville with 981 total beds, and is the primary teaching hospital for ECU Brody School of Medicine.

In the Department of Emergency Medicine, our mission is to provide and continue to improve the quality of health care services whenever and wherever the patient needs them; to promote scholarly activity regarding emergency health care through education and research; and to maximize the accumulation and utilization of resources in order to accomplish service and scholarly activities, and promote the wellness and satisfaction of department members.

Our tertiary care catchment area includes more than 1.4 million people in eastern North Carolina, many of whom arrive via our integrated mobile critical care and air medical service. In September of 2016, we extended our coverage to begin providing professional medical services at The Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, North Carolina.

Our current faculty members possess diverse interests and expertise leading to extensive state and national-level involvement. The emergency medicine residency is well-established and includes 12 EM and 2 EM/IM residents per year.

Job Duties

The Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program at the Brody School of Medicine partners with Vidant Medical Center to promote excellence in clinical care through the application of safe, high-quality, simulation-based education. The program brings together simulation-based education throughout the medical center, health sciences campus, and university. The mission of the Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program is to promote excellence in clinical care, patient, learner, and practitioner safety, and to improve multidisciplinary team performance through the use of simulation modalities. Trainees are provided faculty guided instruction using a variety of simulation modalities for teaching, practice, performance assessment, and maintenance of skills competency.

The Clinical Simulation Program is seeking a Clinical Instructor for our Simulation Fellowship. The fellowship is designed for Emergency Medicine residency graduates interested in pursuing a career in simulation-based education. The Simulation Fellowship is a collaborative educational program of the East Carolina University (ECU) Brody School of Medicine Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program, the ECU Department of Emergency Medicine, and Vidant Medical Center Office of Graduate Medical Education. The fellow will be given the academic appointment of Clinical Instructor in the Brody School of Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Since there are no ACGME accredited fellowships in Medical Simulation, this fellowship cannot be accredited. The program is combined with the Graduate Certificate in Education in the Healthcare Professions.

The fellow will spend a minimum of 30 hours per week in fellowship related educational activity in and/or related to the Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program. Fellow educational activities are based in the Clinical Simulation Center at Brody School of Medicine and include simulation activities in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Brody School of Medicine, Vidant Medical Center clinical services, regional outreach with the mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit, ECU Innovation and Design Lab Osprey Transport Simulator, Office of Clinical Skills Assessment and Education, and other Health Sciences campus colleges and schools.

The fellow will also perform clinical duties as an attending in our state-of-the-art emergency department, which has resident physicians from our fully accredited emergency medicine residency training program.
