The National Eye Institute (NEI) supports research into the causes, natural history, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the eye and visual system, and in related fields; basic research in the biology of vision; the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research; and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases.  The Director, NEI provides leadership, vision, and direction to the Institute with unparalleled impact on vision research at a national level.  The Director advises the NIH Director and Institute and Center (IC) Directors on science and policy matters concerning disorders of the eye and visual system research and research training and serves as principal liaison with other agencies of the DHHS and Federal Government. To support its mission, the NEI has an annual budget of approximately $800 million and a staff totaling 273 FTEs and approximately 400 non-FTE scientists, other professionals, and support staff.

We are looking for applicants with a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy,  enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead within a dynamic and diverse organization focused on vision science. Applicants must possess an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant discipline and have senior-level research experience and knowledge of research programs related to eye and visual systems disorders research.
