Indiana University School of Medicine is announcing a search for the Director of the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the state of Indiana. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a visionary leader to take a strong cancer center to the next level of excellence, influence cancer care at one of the nation’s largest health systems, and make significant strides in reducing the burden of cancer in Indiana.

In addition to overseeing the center’s robust research programs, the Director will help set strategic vision and direction for cancer services at IU Health, IU School of Medicine’s clinical partner, and will ensure the school continues to train a healthy pipeline of talented cancer specialists and researchers.

The next Director will join an institution with a proud tradition of excellence in cancer research and care. IU School of Medicine faculty developed the curative therapy for testis cancer, pioneered the field of cord blood transplantation and were at the forefront of identifying effective treatments for NF1, a previously untreatable and sometimes life-threatening class of tumors. IU Simon Cancer Center members and funded researchers also come from the IU Schools of Nursing, Public Health, Science and Regenstrief Institute. The center has the robust externally funded and interdisciplinary research in cancer control and cancer survivorship are recognized nationally, as well as interdisciplinary training programs that produce some of our nation’s finest cancer researchers.

Today, both IU School of Medicine and IU Simon Cancer Center are on a phenomenal trajectory. The school’s NIH funding has increased more than 50 percent in five years. Likewise, the cancer center has experienced tremendous growth. Over the course of its most recent NCI funding period, it achieved a 38 percent increase in NCI funding (Direct Costs), a 176 percent increase in multi-PI grants and attracted more than 30 new investigators in cancer research to IU. In recognition, it was designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the NCI in 2019.

The position is ideal for a collaborative and transformational leader who can build on the existing strengths of the IU Simon Cancer Center by:

• Stimulating basic and translational research that leads to a better understanding of the mechanisms of carcinogenesis, drug resistance and new pathways to treatment options
• Facilitating the development of clinical trials and developing a culture that promotes enrollment in studies throughout the health care system
• Enhancing clinical programs by optimizing the delivery of care and adding strategic programs based on research developments and emerging opportunities in the field
• Promoting community engagement and outreach activities that facilitate impactful health policy, expand education activities and address cancer disparities, particularly in underserved populations
• Spearheading population-based approaches to cancer prevention and control
• Developing educational and training opportunities to enhance the clinical and research cancer-related workforce locally and globally

Minimum qualifications include an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent, evidence of leadership or a vision for leadership of an interdisciplinary center, and outstanding academic credentials such as a track record of extramural research funding.
