Chief Ambulatory Medical Officer

The University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UI Health) is seeking a Chief Ambulatory Medical Officer (CAMO) reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, with a significant reporting responsibility to the Dean of the College of Medicine. The CAMO leads in collaborative partnership with the Chief Ambulatory Operations Officer (CAO), which entails a significant networking responsibility to the CEO of the Hospital via a constructive working partnership with the CAO. A formal member of the Outpatient Care Center leadership team with a primary role to support the development of system-wide strategies and advance the development of the professional practice initiatives focused on expanding the UI Health clinical patient volume and regional market share, participate in establishing clinical service lines and clinical programs of excellence, improving patient access and satisfaction, improving quality and improving overall clinical outcomes. Developing a system-wide ambulatory strategy focused on expanding ambulatory patient volume, improving the overall care delivery environment, fostering best practice in ambulatory care, enhancing use of administrative and clinical data to innovate and improve the patient care continuum, and improve the work life and practice life for engaged staff and providers in the UI Health environment. A special focus will be the implementation of improved workflows and the ongoing implementation of EHR-related tools via the 3i Project, inclusive of Health clinic activities related to hospital-based clinics as well as non-hospital provider based clinics. The ability to be a collaborative resource and unifying agent for both the College of Medicine and UI Health resulting in expanded synergies from these UI Health entities is a vital capability for this position.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Serving as liaison between Hospital administrative leadership, College of Medicine and UI Health Physician Group Leadership, and outside parties and agencies. Build effective relationships with UI Health and medical staff Leadership.
  • Supporting all objectives set by the UI Health including financial, volume, employee engagement, service excellence, and diversity.
  • Establish personal and professional credibility as a recognized physician supporter representing UI Health clinical ambulatory services.
  • Identify ways to develop and promote physician and other provider engagement that contribute to hospital and enterprise-wide goals, performance improvement initiatives and the professional peer review process.
  • Assist UI Health Leadership in defining priorities for support and development of key clinical programs, bringing physicians' perspectives to those strategic discussions.
  • Develop working knowledge of the campus financials including reimbursement sources, funds flow and costs associated with provision of care and support of the academic mission.
  • Focus on quality improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives in concert with priorities set by UI Health and the UI Physician Group.
  • Serve as primary executive and physician lead for the 3i Project implementation related to OCC operations.
  • Serve as primary physician lead for the Access Optimization initiative.
  • Review medical directorships and other purchased physician services, i.e. clarify expectations, reporting relationships, accountability structure and cost effectiveness.
  • Participate in the development of clinic facility plans and space utilization scenarios, providing input to and participating in space allocation decisions. Assist in providing utilization benchmarks and space performance optimization goals, with consideration for new models of clinic operations.
  • Assist in guiding process changes, clinic operations and flow modifications associated with acquired information systems technology, most importantly the EHR platform. Be a leader in the implementation of processes driven by the design assumptions of UI Health's EHR system, adapting to organization to the design principles assumed by the EHR, and educating medical staff regarding the need and value of this management premise.
  • Assist in guiding the process changes associated with the evolving University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics Medical Staff Peer and Exemplary Review Committee (PERC), serving as a strong communication vehicle for physician issues.
  • Promote a high degree of cross-department collaboration, helping to organize, clarify, and prioritize the institution's collective quality, safety, and utilization goals.
  • Promote the refinement of information measurement and dissemination processes that bring together accurate and timely financial, resource utilization, clinical and functional outcome, service, and access data in a user-friendly way to effectively drive organizational knowledge and performance.
  • Support efforts to advance and/ or establish specialized clinical services and service lines centered on quality, cost affordability, innovation, and market dominance.
  • Support efforts to improve UI Health clinical operations from the multiple vantage points of a) consumer perception, b) patient satisfaction, c) referring provider relations I satisfaction, and d) clinical outcomes (e.g., clinical efficiency, clinical effectiveness, evidence-based practice guidelines, etc.)
  • In partnership with clinical provider Leadership, develop strategies to a) enhance relationships with affiliate health-care partners, and b) increase UI Health clinical program, viability and patient market share among the minority patient populations within its PSA.
  • Implement strategies to maximize the learning environment for UI COM trainees.
  • Other appropriate duties as assigned by the Dean of the College of Medicine and the Chief Medical Officer.

Requirements include:

  • Professional physician-related doctorate level degree (e.g., MD, DO, etc.) required.
  • Masters degree in Public Health, Business or related field will be considered an additive factor.
  • State of Illinois clinical licensure (or eligibility) required.
  • Previous leadership experience in an academic medical setting and experience in clinical performance evaluation preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills to effectively interact with University and departmental officials/staff.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to address difficult, complex issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach to develop and maintain effective work relationships.
  • A strong record as a respected clinician.
  • Successful track record of collaboration between full time faculty and private physicians in the community.
  • Working knowledge of healthcare finance and the changing dynamics as the result of health care reform.
  • Understanding of the use of clinical information system and technology to enable institutional goals.
  • Experience with and commitment to medical education and graduate medical education, including evolving regulatory and accrediting issues and anticipating future directions.
  • Knowledge of and a commitment to clinical and translational research.
  • Working knowledge of healthcare finance and the changing dynamics as the result of national health reform.
