Job Description:
The individual will be responsible for examining daily tissue biopsies prepared by laboratory personnel, tasked with checking the accuracy of lab tests and interpreting the results in order to facilitate the patient’s diagnosis and treatment. He or she works closely with laboratory staff and plays a vital role in providing timely results as part of a patient’s primary health care team.

Principle Duties:
This is not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities, but rather a general description of the work performed by this position.

-Ensuring daily specimens are diagnosed in a 24/hr or less time frame.
-Ability to work collaboratively with other pathologists.
-Capable of maintaining an efficient workflow when diagnosing biopsies.
-Comply with all safety and regulatory policies.

Education:
Medical degree and appropriate licensing.

Experience:
Previous experience dealing with diagnosing of gastroenterology specimens.

Complexity of Duties:
Have the ability to prioritize and to handle several tasks for maximum workflow efficiency.

Supervision Received:
Routine work is performed without direct supervision.

Competency Assessment:
Staff pathologist(s) will be evaluated by the medical director initially, at 90 days and annually thereafter. A “Competency Assessment For Laboratory Medical Personnel” checklist will be used and will be reviewed with pathologist(s) at quarterly performance improvement meetings. Any specific areas that require improvement or demonstrate unsatisfactory performance will be documented and discussed directly with the pathologist(s). An “Action Plan” to improve any deficient areas will be developed with the input of the pathologist(s) and documented.

Contact With Others:
Must interact with fellow coworkers, internal and external client interaction requires courtesy and tact.

Confidential Data:
Laboratory results and data are privileged information and must be given only to the attending physician or requesting laboratory when authorized by the Medical Director.

Physical Demands:
Must be alert and energetic with constant attention to detail and adherence to workflow demands.
Attention to detail is required in the completion of activities.

Working Conditions:
Routine work encompasses working with chemical/biohazardous material. All safety policies and practices are to be followed and are a condition of employment.
