The Opportunity

Reading Hospital is seeking a Chair of Emergency Medicine who  will  provide  exemplary  leadership  to  a  Department  that  is committed  to  sustaining  a  tradition  of  excellence  in clinical  care. As one of the busiest emergency departments in the country, the next Chair will arrive at a pivotal juncture in the Department’s history as it sustains its enormous volumes while focusing on operational and fiscal efficiencies, recruitment and engagement of physicians and the commitment to educational training. With approximately 140,000 adult patient visits per year, Reading Hospital is a 120-bed unit, Level I Trauma Center and also includes a full service pediatric ED – the James & Deborah Radwanski Pediatric Emergency Department – which opened in FY2019 and treats 30,000 children annually. Housed within the Department is an ACGME accredited Emergency Medicine residency training program with 24 training approved slots, preparing the next generation of physicians for careers in emergency medicine. With excellent resources, state of the art facilities, and strong support from hospital executives, the Chair will be a leader within the system and serve as a significant contributor to efforts that will expand the reach and cohesiveness of the clinical enterprise.

The Department, which includes 60 physicians as well as advanced practitioners and residents, is the heart and soul of the Reading Hospital and provides an essential service to the community. Every aspect of the community – from illness, injury, violence, and addiction – is seen in the ED so it becomes virtually impossible to separate the Department from the community. As a result, the Chair must deeply understand the needs of the community; she/he will be expected to be an effective advocate and a visible leader, strengthening relationships outside of the hospital and maintaining a deep connection to the community and its members.

The Chair will be an academically astute, clinically oriented, operational physician executive who will provide strategic direction while monitoring volume, clinical quality, operations improvements and financial performance of the Department. It is anticipated that she/he will be a respected clinician, educator and mentor who encourages and supports the professional development of each provider. The Chair will be personally responsible for promoting and maintaining excellence and integrity in patient care while enhancing the quality of education and research in the Department.

Reading Hospital seeks an effective leader as Chair who will inspire providers while encouraging the Department’s mission and programs, particularly as it relates to the current transformation and evolution occurring in healthcare. The Emergency Department, which ends up impacting all clinical services in the health system, plays a central role in the medical center’s population health strategy and will be a critical asset in contributing to the implementation of Reading Hospital’s strategic plan. The Hospital is in the midst of organizing around integrated services lines and emergency medicine plays an integral role in this service line development. In fact, 50% of the quality initiatives, operational metrics and strategic goals of the organization are directly tied to the emergency department and the remaining 50% of projects/initiatives cross the ED in some capacity, igniting the need for a Chair who is collaborative, communicative, and will work closely to facilitate strong relationships across specialties, disciplines and hospital leadership.

Key Responsibilities

The Chair will be expected to lead the Department in a manner that contributes to the success of Reading Hospital’s mission and exemplifies the qualities of leadership, collaboration, communication, and fairness.

In addition to the above, the Chair will be specifically held accountable for the following:

  • Assume a leadership position within the institution to foster and integrate emergency medicine services to meet the needs of the vast clinical enterprise;
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of emergency medicine services and programs throughout the Tower Health system;
  • Develop the academic careers of existing providers, and recruit and mentor outstanding new providers;
  • Identify collaborative relationships which can lead to productive development of innovative educational programs and research activities throughout the institution;
  • Collaborate with faculty of other clinical departments in the continued development of the clinical enterprise and foster clinical research collaborations;
  • Evaluate the current strengths of the Department, and identify areas for productive growth in clinical, educational and research programs.

Professional Experience/Qualifications

  • An MD, DO, or MD/PhD with a sustained record of clinical innovation, leadership and scholarship.
  • Advanced degree in management preferred – MHA/MBA/MPH/M.ED.
  • Recognition in the field of Emergency Medicine as evidenced by involvement in academic and clinical societies at a national level.
  • Progressive administrative experience, preferably in a teaching environment.
  • Board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or the American Board of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine
