The Opportunity

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), one of the nation’s pre-eminent academic medical centers seeks a dynamic physician executive to join the organization as Vice President, Perioperative Services. BIDMC is part of $5.6 billion Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH), a newly formed integrated health system.  In this key role, the Vice President, Perioperative Services is a member of the hospital’s Senior Management team and has the responsibility and authority over perioperative services operations, quality and safety. 

The Organization

BIDMC was formed in 1996, through the merger of Beth Israel and New England Deaconess Hospitals. A major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, BIDMC is a fully integrated academic medical center and Level 1 Trauma Center with 719 beds. As a national leader in patient care quality and safety, BIDMC is setting new standards in the way health data can be used to improve care and deliver services. BIDMC currently uses a combination of systems, and has a 20-year tradition of creating its own innovative clinical systems which are web-based, mobile enabled and cloud hosted.

In Fiscal Year 2018, BIDMC had more than 35,000 inpatient discharges, 703,000 ambulatory clinic visits, 55,000 emergency department visits and more than 5,000 births. BIDMC has 13,000 employees, including, 2,721 registered nurses and 4,627 non-clinical employees. In FY 2018, total net patient service revenue was $1.8 billion with a positive operating margin of 2.8%.

The perioperative services at BIDMC are busy and fast growing services.  The organization acts as a major referral center and is constantly making investments and looking to recruit and retain the best surgical, nursing and anesthesia talent nationwide.

The organization is in the midst of building a new operating suite which will add seven new operating rooms and four additional procedure rooms.  This planned expansion is part of a longer term plan to add 30 new surgeons to the medical staff in the next five years. In Fiscal Year 2018 there were 11,008 Inpatient Surgeries and 14,628 Ambulatory Surgery Cases performed in 41 Operating Rooms, 13 Endoscopy Suites, and 7 Cath Lab Suites.

The Position

Reporting to the President of BIDMC, the Vice President, Perioperative Services is a member of the hospital’s Senior Management team and has responsibility and authority over perioperative services operations, quality and safety.  She/he will be accountable for development of clinical systems, processes and standards, improving surgical and procedural quality and efficiency and ultimately helping the organization to deliver on its mission of extraordinary care.

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, confident and engaging physician leader with strong communication, interpersonal and relationship management skills.   He or she will possess excellent listening skills with the demonstrated ability to engage with and build effective relationships with physicians.    Requirements include an MD or DO, five to eight years related work experience, one to three years supervisory/management experience required, and experience within an academic medical center setting.
