The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) seeks an outstanding leader for its Division of Cardiology. The Division, comprising 15 MD faculty, 2 PhD faculty and clinical/research staff, is committed to academic, clinical and educational excellence and the care of vulnerable populations. The Division Chief position represents an opportunity to shape the future for a successful and growing division.

The division's clinical programs include a high-volume ambulatory clinic consisting of a general cardiology practice as well as subspecialty clinics in HIV cardiovascular disease, heart failure, structural heart disease, complex coronary disease, pulmonary hypertension, anticoagulation, and geriatric cardiology. The inpatient service is an active teaching service that cares for patients on the wards, cardiovascular care unit and provides consultation services to the entire hospital. The cardiac catheterization laboratory is a new facility with state-of-the-art equipment including a hybrid operating room and coronary suite where both diagnostic and interventional procedures are performed. ZSFG is one of five hospitals in San Francisco to offer 24/7 STEMI services and is the most active STEMI program in San Francisco averaging over 120 STEMI activations per year. The echocardiography laboratory offers standard transthoracic and transesophageal imaging as well as pharmacologic and exercise stress testing. Additional non-invasive services include ambulatory ECG monitoring and treadmill ECG stress testing. Inpatient, cath lab, and echocardiography volumes have grown substantially over the past 3 years. The division is committed to sustained growth of these clinical programs and introduction and application of novel diagnostic and therapeutic treatment strategies.

Research programs focus on global health and vulnerable populations and include studies focused on cardiovascular disease in HIV, proteomics and precision medicine, and lipid lowering through PCSK9 inhibition. The Clinical Pharmacology Program in the Division of Cardiology encompasses research with an emphasis on the cardiovascular and health effects of nicotine, cannabis, and tobacco, and houses an analytical chemistry laboratory of 10-12 people that operates as a national resource for tobacco biomarker analyses. Total research funding reaches over $10 million annually.

Education of medical students, residents and fellows, in inpatient as well as outpatient settings, represents an important mission of the Division. UCSF medicine residents consistently rate the ZSFG cardiology inpatient rotation as one of their best educational experiences. Additionally, the Division holds the largest annual CME cardiology course on the west coast, Advances in Heart Disease, now in its 36th year.

ZSFG and UCSF have been partners in public health since 1872, attracting physicians who are leaders in their fields and making ZSFG one of the nation's top academic medical centers, training tomorrow's providers and leaders and providing the best care that medical science has to offer. ZSFG is an essential part of the San Francisco Health Network, serving over 100,000 patients each year and providing 20 percent of the city's inpatient care. We serve the community with a full complement of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, diagnostic and psychiatric services for adults and children. ZSFG offers compassionate and culturally competent care to a diverse community of patients in more than 20 languages. ZSFG is owned and operated by the City and County of San Francisco, Department of Public Health and is part of a city-wide integrated health care system, providing primary, specialty and hospital care for vulnerable populations. ZSFG opened a new hospital in May 2016 and UCSF at ZSFG is breaking ground on a new research and academic building in early 2020. Additionally, the health system recently implemented an integrated electronic health record, and the ambulatory clinic spaces are scheduled for a state-of-the-art remodel in the next three years. The faculty in the Division of Cardiology play key roles in clinical management and leadership.

The Department of Medicine research programs at ZSFG receive over $100 million annually in funding. Research conducted at ZSFG has led to important breakthroughs in basic, clinical and systems research. The successful candidate will join the UCSF Department of Medicine (DOM) faculty and be included in the UCSF DOM compensation and benefits program.

We seek a Chief who has a demonstrated commitment to science, education and clinical practice, the ability to lead a diverse group and work with hospital partners using a collaborative approach, success in promoting or producing scholarship and funding, and the ability to mentor young academic clinicians. Successful candidates must demonstrate exceptional leadership, administrative and organizational skills and have national stature in academic Cardiology. Board-certification in Cardiology is required. An understanding of and commitment to the safety net population is also crucial.
