Position: U.S. Research Editor
Contract: 4 days per week
Start date: ASAP
The BMJ is one of the world’s leading general medical journals. Our mission is to lead the debate on health and to engage, inform, and stimulate doctors, researchers, and other health professionals in ways that will improve outcomes for patients. We are looking for a US-based research and outreach editor to join us.
The successful candidate will join a growing BMJ team in the U.S., while also liaising closely with the BMJ Editorial team in London and reporting to BMJ’s head of research, Dr. Elizabeth Loder.
The incumbent will read, select, and handle the peer review and editing of research papers. In addition, she or he will lead author outreach activities, forging key relationships with top researchers, focusing on major medical research centers across the United States and flying the flag for BMJ in the U.S.
Ideally, the successful candidate will be an academic physician with clinical and research experience. She or he will work for The BMJ on average three to four days a week and continue with outside clinical and/or academic work on other days, with flexible scheduling to allow for occasional longer periods on the clinical service. We encourage remote working for this role, and candidates based anywhere in the US are encouraged to apply. The job involves regular domestic travel to meet with research teams and represent The BMJ at medical meetings and other events. Occasional international travel is also needed.
Responsibilities:
- Reading, appraising, and managing peer review of research articles using a web based manuscript tracking system and negotiating with authors
- Attending the weekly manuscript committee meeting every Thursday (in person or by phone) to discuss submitted papers
- Liaising with authors, reviewers and technical editors regarding revisions
Depending on editorial experience, assisting with screening of research papers, teaching and interacting with trainees, liaising with patient reviewers and The BMJ patient editor - Developing and maintaining links with the US medical research community, and scanning the current literature to aid in the identification of suitable targets for outreach efforts
- Writing editorials
- Regular travel to meet with academic researchers and other groups around the US, and to represent The BMJ at professional meetings or outside venues, to identify potential submissions, and to keep up-to-date with current developments in medicine
- Suggesting and helping to develop new initiatives for the further development of the journal
- Such other duties as may be necessary from time to time (e.g. covering for other team members during holiday and sickness absences)
Qualifications & skills:
Essential attributes:
- Qualified medical doctor, active in clinical practice and/or clinical research
- Academic appointment at a US medical school, with experience and knowledge of US academic medicine
- Strong communication skills
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Ability to work well alone and in a team
- Experience in appraising medical research
- Willingness to travel
- Familiarity with IT systems: PCs, databases, word-processing, publishing software, email, and internet.
Desirable attributes:
- Some experience of medical editing and journal peer review
- Ability to work well under pressure
