If you want to be part of a small, supported and happy team of 4 Consultants and a Medical Officer that works well together, then you have to consider Taranaki as your next place to live and work. This position will suit a newly qualified or experienced Consultant and we will consider part time or full time requests.

The Consultant’s main duties will include:

  • Theatre sessions
  • Outpatients gynaecology session
  • Ward rounds
  • Labour ward rounds that include teaching tutorials, audit activity and supervision
  • Antenatal clinics
  • Colposcopy
  • Participation on the on-call roster

The Consultants work a 1:5 on-call roster and are supported by a second Medical Officer, 3 Registrar’s and 4 House Officer’s.  You will have responsibility for some in-patient and community clinics and provided the opportunity for teaching and supervising junior medical staff.

Taranaki Base Hospital is a regional centre serving a population of 118,000, has 230 beds and is located in New Plymouth, the major city of the beautiful Taranaki Province. The maternity arm of our hospital comprises five birthing rooms, a pregnancy loss room, a birthing pool room and seven antenatal inpatient rooms, as well as 11 single bedded post-natal rooms. Supporting services include a level 2.5 NNU with 8 cots, a paediatric ward, ICU/CCU, operating theatres and medical/surgical and older people’s health in our new modern wards and Theatres.

The department is accredited for O&G training by the R.A.N.Z.C.O.G. and hosts College appointed Registrars throughout the year.
