The Organization

Penn State Health St. Joseph (PSHSJ) is a two-campus health system with outpatient locations and physician offices throughout Berks County and beyond. This non-profit healthcare network consists of a 204-bed Medical Center, a Downtown Campus, a Medical Group, a Physician Hospital Organization and a Foundation.

The system has 2,000 employees, 400 physicians, $280 million in annual operating revenue and is experiencing growth in services lines and in surgical volumes.  PSHSJ offers a full range of outpatient/inpatient diagnostic, medical and surgical services across its enterprise, supporting 47,000 ER visits and 7,500 inpatient admissions annually.

PSHSJ is part of Penn State Health, a $2.3 billion health care enterprise consisting of five hospitals, including one academic medical center/college of medicine, and 57 multispecialty outpatient clinics across nine counties in central Pennsylvania.  Penn State Health and Highmark Health (one of the largest health insurance companies in PA) entered into a strategic partnership in 2017 to focus on improving access, quality and affordability of health care for patients and their families across south central Pennsylvania.

The Opportunity

Penn State Health is rapidly expanding, and this is an exciting opportunity working with engaged senior leadership to lead a group of talented and committed medical staff while navigating integration efforts within a newly formed regional system. The role will include helping the organization meet shared goals for an achievement of key metrics and continuous improvement of quality and patient experience.  This is a chance to lead within an organization that is highly regarded by the community for its clinical care and caring attitude and to work with a group of providers who enjoy a collegial and collaborative approach to providing patient care.  PSHSJ and Penn State Health are well positioned for continued growth and success.

The Candidate

The successful candidate must hold an MD or DO Degree and be able to maintain an active unlimited license to practice medicine in Pennsylvania.  The candidate must have 5+ years’ experience in a Board-Certified recognized specialty.  The candidate will have experience in leadership positions, and Medical Management and Medical Affairs.  Experience working within a health care system and a community hospital environment is valued.

The Community

With its rich history, abundant natural beauty and cultural vitality, the Berks County and Greater Reading residents enjoy picturesque hiking trails and parks, nationally ranked bike trails, championship minor league sports teams, museums, street fairs, and more.  The area is home to many distinguished higher education and vocational/technical institutions and top ranked public and private schools.  The Reading metro area continues to attract new residents with its low cost of living and low crime rates.  Reading is conveniently located near Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York City.  With a 60- to 90-minute drive in either direction, residents can enjoy big city excitement, beaches or mountains.
