Reporting to the Chief Physician Executive, Baystate Health & Regional Executive Dean of UMMS-Baystate, the Chair of Anesthesiology has overall responsibility for strategy, clinical- and educational program development, faculty and staff professional development, and operations within the Department of Anesthesiology. The Chair provides clinical and academic leadership to support exceptional quality and high-value care, excellence in medical education both at the graduate level and at the undergraduate medical level, as BH is the home of University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS)-Baystate, the regional campus of UMMS; and clinical research activity. The Chair concurrently serves as the Chair, Department of Anesthesia, UMMS-Baystate. The Chair actively supports and promotes patient safety, continuous performance and quality improvement, risk management, and efficient resource utilization linked to evidence-based medicine.

The Department of Anesthesiology provides anesthesia services across the entire health system, serving all system hospitals and all system ambulatory sites. The faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology are employed by Springfield Anesthesia Service, a physician-owned, private practice group which has been providing exclusive anesthesia services at Baystate for more than 50 years. The Chair serves on the executive committee of the anesthesiology group.
