Position Summary:
The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the Department of Medical Education. This position is a tenure-track position at the rank of an Assistant or Associate Professor. The ideal candidate would be a diverse multidiscipline educator with a demonstrated background and interest in expanding their teaching portfolio in the basic medical sciences (physiology, histology, neuroscience, anatomy and pathology).

In Fall 2017, the University of Toledo, College of Medicine implemented a systems-based foundational science curriculum that embodies innovation and blended pedagogy that spans 18 months. The candidate would take on a collaborative responsibility to help evolve the horizontal and vertical integration of core foundational science topics in a redesigned MD curriculum. The curriculum foster and builds upon integration and the desired candidate will work as a part a dynamic team of professionals supporting and helping evolve all aspects of the new curriculum. It is expected, that the candidate will assume leadership responsibilities at the course level, teach clinically relevant material, facilitate large and small group instruction and help advance the longitudinal integration of basic science disciplines.

This position is centric to the continued development of the curriculum, infrastructure, and processes. The candidate will collaborate with fellow foundational science and clinical educators to continue the integration of concepts throughout the curriculum; and serve as content expert and leader in developing specific educational and assessment materials to be-delivered in a variety of student-centered and online pedagogies.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:

  1. A Ph.D. in a related field and/or one of the following: MD., D.O. or the equivalent
  2. Minimum of 5 year in teaching in medical school environment
  3. Strong interpersonal skills to motivate, encourage and lead faculty as a system or thread director
  4. Expertise and interest in teaching basic medical sciences the includes, but not limited to physiology, neuroscience, histology, pathology, anatomy is preferred
  5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  6. Knowledge and/or understanding of LCME standards and competency based medical education, is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Demonstrate knowledge or interest in innovative pedagogical tools such as team based learning and/ or small group format.
  2. Experience using innovative and varied teaching methodologies
  3. Leadership in directing medical school courses
  4. Ability to work effectively within a team structure
  5. Demonstrate leadership, collegiality and professionalism with faculty and staff.
  6. Demonstrated a strong commitment to a team-based instructional environment.
  7. Ability to utilize peer and student feedback in enhancing curriculum integration and design.
  8. Scholarship and research interests related to medical education

Position Description:

  1. The teaching position roles and responsibilities would include (but not limited to) the following:
  2. Provide instruction in the foundational sciences in a diverse pedagogical learning environment.
  3. Develop instructional learning objectives, materials and assessments that will engage the learner and measure competence in undergraduate medical education.
  4. Provide appropriate mentoring, support to junior faculty to help integrate and implement a cohesive, longitudinally integrated curriculum.
  5. Engage in administrative duties, as assigned that include, but not limited to Thread and System co-directorship in the foundational science curriculum.
  6. Expand teaching portfolio to include new areas of instruction to foster a multi-disciplined path of career development.
  7. Participate/collaborate in education scholarship.
  8. Be an active participate on University and/or College of Medicine committees, in addition to special ad hoc workgroup/taskforces, as assigned.
