MEDICAL DIRECTOR - MICROBIOLOGY LABORATORY
METROHEALTH MEDICAL CENTER

The Department of Pathology of the MetroHealth System (MHS), a principal teaching hospital of the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, seeks a qualified candidate to serve as Medical Director of the Microbiology Laboratory.

The MHS is a fully integrated provider of high quality health care, consisting of 731-bed main campus and 13 additional inpatient and outpatient facilities throughout Cuyahoga County. The Microbiology Laboratory performs all infectious disease testing for MHS inpatient and outpatient clinics, including serologic and molecular diagnostic testing. In addition, it supports several public health initiatives, including the county's Sexually Transmitted Diseases Clinic and the Tuberculosis Clinic. The Director of Microbiology is an active member of the MHS Antibiotic Stewardship committee and Infection Prevention Committee.

The successful candidate will lead the tradition of excellence in laboratory operations, teaching and postgraduate training within the MHS Division of Microbiology. The Pathology Laboratory will be moving to a new facility in two years, and the Division Head of Microbiology will be integrally involved with planning the instrumentation and efficient operations in the new space. The candidate will provide medical support for the day to day operations of the Clinical Microbiology laboratory, along with providing consultative and interpretative information to referring clinicians and clients. The successful candidate will participate in the development and modification of technical protocols and policies related to clinical Microbiology, and will be actively involved in teaching Pathology residents, fellows, and students. In addition, the candidate will be engaged in academic research, and will support activities leading to the achievement of departmental and institutional goals

Qualified applicants should hold either an MD or a PhD degree, or both. MD candidates should be board certified in AP/CP or CP by the American Board of Pathology (ABP) and should have successfully completed a medical microbiology fellowship with board certification in medical microbiology subspecialty by the ABP. PhD candidates should have completed a clinical microbiology fellowship and be certified by the American Board of Medical Microbiology. Both MD and PhD candidates should have at least two years of experience as a medical director or assistant director of a clinical microbiology laboratory. They must have a strong working knowledge of all aspects of clinical laboratory regulatory requirements. Opportunities for academic advancement in the CWRU clinical sciences tract will be commensurate with the applicant's experience and achievements.
