Assistant in Anesthesia sought by Massachusetts General Hospital (“MGH”)/MGPO, the non-profit physician’s organization of MGH, charged with the mission of providing patient care and teaching at MGH, including the training of Harvard Medical School students, to monitor patients before, during, and after anesthesia and counteract adverse reactions or complications. Record type and amount of anesthesia and patient condition throughout procedure. Provide and maintain life support and airway management and help prepare patients for emergency surgery. Administer anesthetic or sedation during medical procedures, using local, intravenous, spinal, or caudal methods. Examine patient, obtain medical history, and use diagnostic tests to determine risk during surgical, obstetrical, and other medical procedures. Coordinate administration of anesthetics with surgeons during operation. Decide when patients have recovered or stabilized enough to be sent to another room or ward or to be sent home following outpatient surgery. Confer with other medical professionals to determine type and method of anesthetic or sedation to render patient sensible to pain. Order laboratory tests, x-rays, and other diagnostic procedures. Primarily in General Surgery and Orthopedics, supervise, teach and evaluate residents and medical students who rotate through the operating rooms of the hospital.

Position located in Boston, MA.

Requirements include a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree or equivalent medical degree and completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in Anesthesiology.

Must possess or be eligible to obtain a full license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Must possess or be eligible to obtain a Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration and Federal DEA Certificates. Must be board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Anesthesiology or comparable foreign national certifying organization in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine (must pass oral boards, or comparable, within 3 years of hire).
