The Person: The NCI is seeking an innovative leader to serve as its Director for the Center for Cancer Training (CCT). The NCI is the principal agency of the Federal Government for cancer research and for carrying out the National Cancer Program. The Institute conducts research in its own facilities, directs research carried out under contract, and provides grant support of research and training in non-federal institutions in the United States and abroad. The NCI supports its extramural and intramural training programs through the CCT. CCT plans, directs, organizes, oversees, evaluates, and supports NCI training and career development programs to catalyze the development of 21st century workforce capable of advancing cancer research through a scientifically integrated approach. www.cancer.gov/CCT

The Director, CCT, is responsible for providing authoritative, technical and scientific leadership and guidance for CCT’s complex and visible programs, grant mechanisms and activities.  The Director, CCT, manages an operational budget of approximately $5 million and a grants budget of approximately $155 million to support more than 960 extramural training and career development awards in the basic, clinical, translational, population and behavioral sciences. The Director, CCT, also monitors research training and career development activities for more than 900 fellows and trainees in NCI's Center for Cancer Research (CCR) laboratories. The Director provides authoritative leadership and oversight in implementing the CCT’s training mission including overseeing and facilitating the broad strategic planning, development, implementation and evaluation of NCI biomedical research recruitment and training programs.  The Director also works to diversify the training and workforce landscape by working in coordination with and support of both NCI and NIH diversity training programs and activities The Director serves as a senior leader within the NCI, providing counsel and advice to the NCI Director and other senior administrators.

Position Requirements:  The successful candidate will have an M.D. and/or Ph.D. in a health allied field with knowledge of current developments in cancer research and contemporary challenges and best practices in biomedical research training and workforce development.  The candidate must have extensive experience in: (1) leading a diverse, highly-complex research training program that supports training and career development of investigators in biomedical research; (2) providing expert advice to senior leaders on the scientific and clinically relevant training policies and programs; (3) developing innovative training programs for advancing cancer research; (4) managing large operational budget and grants portfolios; and  (5) supervising scientific and administrative staff.  The candidate must appreciate the new trends in cancer research, be aware of the complex challenges facing the national and international biomedical research workforce and have the ability to communicate and collaborate well with others.

Salary/Benefits: Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate. A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid. A full package of federal Civil Service benefits is available, including: retirement, health and life insurance, long term care insurances leave, and a Thrift Savings Plan (401K equivalent).
