The Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (APOM). A uniquely close-knit and diverse group of over 250 faculty and staff are the heart of the program; they provide clinical services across the OHSU hospitals, collaborate with the VA Portland Health Care System, and notably have a research enterprise placing them in the top 20 for NIH funding of anesthesiology departments. The Department is the oldest anesthesia training program on the west coast and its continued success is integral to the vitality of the University.

The Department has a broad scope. It provides pre-operative assessment, perioperative care, anesthesia services, and post-operative care, including critical care and comprehensive pain management. It runs the innovative Comprehensive Pain Center (CPC) housed in a new facility in Portland’s South Waterfront neighborhood. The Department has been recruiting aggressively; the School of Medicine and health system have committed to add 10 new faculty this year.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Chair will lead all aspects of the Department. S/he is responsible for recruitment, development, and retention of an excellent, diverse faculty. The Chair will foster opportunities to expand research across divisions, with a focus on interdisciplinary and collaborative team-based scholarship. S/he will champion the work of the Department by promoting partnerships across the School of Medicine, with other divisions and departments, partner and affiliate hospitals, and external stakeholders.

The Chair will be responsible for ensuring the quality, effectiveness, safety, and efficiency of patient care for services delivered at OHSU hospitals and clinics including Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, and potentially other sites. The Chair is a member of the Executive Management Group which provides overall guidance for decisions related to OR utilization and space allocation, evaluation of new technology, compliance with accreditation standards, fiscal management and operating efficiencies, investigation of complaints and concerns, and communication and education. As OHSU expands its clinical affiliations, the Chair serves as a representative to Health System leadership and the School of Medicine, maintaining relationships that are effective and collaborative inside and outside of the department structure.

The next Chair of APOM will take over during a period of remarkable success at OHSU, defined by both clinical expansion and investment in the basic sciences. Ranked as one of the nation’s top 25 biomedical research institutions in NIH funding, OHSU is a thriving academic health center that has grown steadily over the last decade. In 2018, OHSU’s operating budget reached $3 billion, research award dollars totaled $410 million, and $131 million in philanthropic gifts pushed the University’s capital campaign (launched in 2015) to more than $1.5 billion. OHSU’s physical growth can be seen in the new Robertson Life Sciences Building, a new School of Public Health, the Knight Cancer Research Building, the Center for Health & Healing South, and the Rood Family Pavilion.

OHSU seeks an outstanding MD or MD/PhD clinician with substantial leadership experience, a record of building research, and the ability to sustain partnerships that advance the academic, research, and clinical missions of the Department. The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader who understands current trends in healthcare and medical education, wants to make an impact on anesthesia training, and values the tripartite mission academic medical institutions promote. It is of the utmost importance that the Chair supports these missions as a visible, democratic, and open-minded leader who stands as an advocate for the Department, the School of Medicine, and University as a whole.
