This position is open to those who would join the faculty at any rank, in the In Residence or Adjunct faculty series.

The UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is the largest department of epidemiology in the University of California system and has a strong mission in education, research, and clinical activities. The Department provides a supportive academic environment for original research, including opportunities for collaboration with researchers from other departments and UCSF Schools, as well as teaching and mentoring as part of our Master's Degree in Clinical Research and Epidemiology and Translational Science PhD programs.

The highly successful Master's Degree in Clinical Research Program in the UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is in its fifteenth year and attracts a diverse array of students. Recent changes in the curriculum of the UCSF Medical School (the BRIDGES curriculum) now allow for a greater number of medical students to pursue a joint MD-MAS degree over a total of five years of training.

Duties: The successful candidate would lead and help grow the MD-MAS program. Duties would include:
• Working with the medical school leadership to help develop a program that will attract the interest of UCSF medical students and be responsive to their needs;
• Working with the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics teaching programs' leadership to successfully grow the MD-MAS program as a complement to other training programs within the department;
• Counseling prospective applicants as to the suitability of the program;
• Forming and leading an admissions committee;
• Individual advising of accepted students about choosing research projects and mentors;
• Individual mentoring and monitoring during the program to keep the enrolled students on track as they craft and develop their research requirements;
• Overseeing financial support opportunities for MD- MAS degree candidates; and
• Facilitating and participating in alumni relations.

Leading the MD-MAS Program is expected to require up to 20 percent effort. A successful candidate would also be expected to conduct their own epidemiologic, population-based, and/or clinical or health-services research funded by extramural sources and be committed to regular and ongoing teaching in the realm of clinical and epidemiologic research (for professional and/or graduate students).

Qualifications: Applicants must have an MD degree, as well as formal training in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health or a closely related field. Candidates must have a record of excellence and accomplishment in original research in population-based, clinical, translational, or health services research, and extramural funding for research in areas of interest. They must also have excellent teaching qualifications and ideally have played leadership roles in clinical and/or epidemiologic settings. Candidates must meet the requirement by the time of appointment. Recent initiatives on campus have increased the opportunities for research at the clinical interface and/or research utilizing the electronic health record. Applicants with research of this type are encouraged, although this is not required.

UC San Francisco seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
