The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) seeks to recruit a Clinical Director with creative vision and strong leadership to guide its Clinical Research Program (CRP) within the Division of Intramural Research.  NHGRI is one of 27 Institutes and Centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  For the last quarter-century, the NHGRI Intramural Research Program has taken a major leadership role in advancing genomic medicine, building upon the Human Genome Project, advanced sequencing and bioinformatics capabilities, state-of-the-art chemical genomics facilities, the NIH Clinical Center, and the world-class biomedical research community on the NIH Bethesda campus.  The NHGRI CRP has made extraordinary advances in monogenic disease gene discovery, the analysis of genetically complex disorders, the development of animal models to elucidate disease pathophysiology, and the evaluation of novel targeted therapies. Altogether, the NHGRI Intramural Research Program comprises a research faculty of ~40 investigators dedicated to the genomic analysis of human disease, including 10 tenured physician-scientists and 7 members of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine.

The Clinical Director is responsible for providing overarching and authoritative leadership for a well-respected research portfolio that addresses far-ranging scientific questions involving an array of disorders in which genetics plays, or is thought to play, a significant role.  While the Clinical Director reports to the NHGRI Director, s/he works closely with the NHGRI Scientific Director in overseeing all aspects of NHGRI’s CRP.  In this role, s/he ensures safe and effective clinical care in a research setting; advocates for appropriate resources to assure compliance with all regulatory and safety issues related to patient care and human research subjects protection; develops and implements an organizational vision that fosters innovative, bold, high-reward clinical investigation; oversees the ongoing scientific review of clinical protocols; develops ways to improve service and program performance; ensures the quality of the clinical education environment; supports clinical residency and fellowship training; and creates a work environment that encourages creative thinking, collaboration, transparency, and diversity.  The Clinical Director also serves on the Medical Executive Committee and in other NIH-wide leadership roles.

The ideal candidate is an international leader in the fields of genetics and genomic medicine.  Candidates must have a medical degree and a current medical license, as well as demonstrated expertise in leading cutting-edge genetics and genomics research in the laboratory or in the clinic.  The candidate must have a substantial record of achievement in medicine and research as evidenced by ongoing patient-care activities, clinical teaching, publications, awards, and leadership activities in a relevant clinical specialty.

This is a tenure-eligible position with the opportunity for support of an independent research program.  The selectee could be appointed as a Senior Investigator or as a Senior Clinician.  For more information regarding these two appointment mechanisms, please see:  https://oir.nih.gov/sourcebook/personnel/ipds-appointment-mechanisms.  The position will be filled under Title 5 of the United States code.  Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate.  Pay will be set using the Title 38 Physicians Pay Schedule.  A recruitment incentive may be available, and relocation expenses will be paid.  A full federal Civil Service benefits package is available, including:  retirement, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, leave, and a Thrift Savings Plan (401k equivalent).  The successful candidate is subject to a background investigation and public financial disclosure requirements.
