Deputy Medical Director & Division of Research Director

POSITION SUMMARY

The Deputy Medical Director & Division of Research Director is responsible for all aspects of the administration and management of APA’s Research Division.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Direct, in collaboration with the relevant APA components, all APA research internal and external activities, research conferences, and research training programs.
• Oversee the expansion and operation of a large, national registry as well as associated practice-based research networks. Develop a plan for and direct the use of this national research infrastructure to improve psychiatric diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes in the U.S.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of APA research activities. 
• Develop, in collaboration with other APA Components, an agenda and priorities for clinical and services research that address the needs of psychiatrists, patients, and other stakeholders.
• Organize an effort to expand research capacity in psychiatry, including but not limited to, building research training, mentoring and technical assistance infrastructures, etc. by working with various research and academic organizations, patient advocacy groups, and funders.
• Direct or supervise all maintenance and revision activities of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).
• Serve as a scientific liaison to the NIH, SAMSHA, and other federal and non-federal agencies as well as other organizations with interests in mental health issues including ACNP, AFSP, ADAA, and Society of Biological Psychiatry.
• Provide scientific consultation to the CEO/Medical Director and Divisions and Departments of the APA to assure legislative policy positions, media presentations, and testimony for Congressional Committees and Federal Agencies concerning APA policy positions are supported by the latest research.
• Serve as scientific liaison with international agencies and organizations involved in mental health issues (e.g., WHO/ICD).
• Keep abreast of funding opportunities and take the initiative and lead in organizing and/or writing grants in areas pertinent to the activities of the office.
• Responsible, in collaboration with other APA departments, for developing and implementing activities to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of mental health and substance use services delivered by psychiatrists and other clinicians. 
• Supervise component liaisons with the APA Council on Research, and all of their respective Committees.
• Include consultation and services to the APA Foundation annual evaluations, projects, and awards (e.g., Research Fellowship).
• Responsible for all budgetary formulation and management of the department programs, and for the appropriate supervision and evaluation of program staff.
• Performs other duties as assigned.                                                                                     

REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS 

• MD (must be a psychiatrist), with at least 15 years of experience.
• Experience in developing and monitoring research (scientific, clinical, population-based, psychiatric epidemiology, and/or health services research research) and department budgets as well as supervision of staff.
• Ability to analyze a variety of complex administrative and organizational problems and make sound policy and procedural recommendations.
• Excellent oral and written communications skills with ability to effectively interact with APA leadership, members, staff, and staff of other organizations.
• Senior level research investigator and research administration experience in Federal Research Institutes or major Academic Institutions that demonstrates a national perspective and reputation in the area of mental health research.
• Experience in writing successful grant applications to Federal or private foundation granting agencies.
