OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

Mercy Medical Center – Sioux City an excellent full time employment opportunity for a Board Certified or Board Eligible Emergency Medicine physician to join a private group practice located in Sioux City, Iowa.

Mercy Medical Center is an American College of Surgeons Level 2 trauma center and a referral center for the tristate region of northwest Iowa, northeast Nebraska and southeast South Dakota. The hospital offers a comprehensive list of services with multiple subspecialties on staff. Specialty support includes neurosurgery, orthopedics, ENT, cardiac and vascular surgery, neurology, psychiatry, trauma surgery, plastic surgery, hand surgery, general and interventional cardiology among others.  Mercy is staffed by a very busy hospitalist service and the Emergency Department works very closely with them to concentrate on throughput and admissions. The majority of admissions to the hospital are completed by the hospitalist group, a team comprised of both physicians and midlevel providers. Emergency physicians and midlevel providers are well respected and work very closely with the hospitalist team and specialty backup. The trauma system is supported by a group of surgeons sharing trauma call and works closely with the group in assessing critical trauma patients and are available for consultation and admission for patients needing observation or admission for any trauma related illness.

The Emergency Department is staffed with primary physician coverage and double coverage is provided by Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners and Second and third year residents from the Family Medicine program provide double coverage in the evening. The group treats approximately 30,000 patients annually with an 18-20% admission rate. It is estimated that 20% of the patients are pediatrics. Physicians work eight hour shifts with the current shift times being 4:00 am to 12:00 pm, 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm and 8:00 pm to 4:00 am. Double coverage is also scheduled in eight hour shifts with 24 hours of coverage. Shift times are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, 6:00 pm to 2:00 am.  With 48 hours of coverage, volumes work out to about 1.7 patients per hour.

Radiology services are located next to the emergency department; however, there is a plan for renovation which would move CT and X-ray into the Emergency Department. The trauma bay includes a mobile ultrasound for FAST or can be used for other procedures as needed. Anesthesia services are available and will assist with patients with difficult airways as preferred by the emergency physician. The Emergency physician usually provides sedation for the procedures performed in the ED or when other specialties need assistance. With the level of subspecialty support very few patients are transferred out of the community.

Shifts are divided among the group members, at approximately 120 to 144 hours per month. Holidays are divided equitably on a rotating basis.

This is an exciting opportunity for the right Emergency Medicine physician to be part of Mercy Medical Center – Sioux City.
