Division Director, NEONATOLOGY

The Children’s Mercy Hospital and University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine seek a dynamic, visionary, and energetic leader to serve as the Division Director of Neonatology.  Candidates for Division Director must have a strong record of health care leadership, academic accomplishments and excellent interpersonal skills. They must be board certified in Neonatology and be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

The new Director of Neonatology will be responsible for leading one of the largest full-service neonatal programs in the country, one that is consistently ranked among the best in the USA.   Our team includes 35 neonatologists, 4 pediatricians, 80 neonatal nurse practitioners, a large multidisciplinary team of direct care providers, a dozen clinical and basic researchers, and administrative staff.

The Division is responsible for care at many sites.  We provide coverage at our 87-bed level 4 NICU on the main campus. In addition, we cover 7 busy level 3 and level 2 NICUs with a combined average daily census of 146 patients across all NICUs covered.  We have a telemedicine program through which we are expanding our reach to all of Kansas and northwest Missouri.  The Division also provides ambulatory specialized care in the comprehensive multidisciplinary neonatal follow up clinics.   In that clinic, there are >4,000 clinic visits/year including a Neonatology-led Infant Tracheostomy and Home Ventilator Program that provides both primary and subspecialty cares to infants requiring ventilator at home.

Our new Division Director will work closely with hospital leadership to align the Division with the hospital’s three-phase plan of foundational, transitional and transformative roadmap to the future.   We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with the capacity to lead well-developed clinical and educational programs, foster growth in current clinical and translational research endeavors, and continue to develop high-quality, innovative LEAN method of clinical services throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area and surrounding region.

The Division of Neonatology is dedicated to discovering and pioneering innovative treatment approaches through ongoing clinical, basic, and translational research. The Division is recognized for being at the forefront of finding genetic links to necrotizing enterocolitis in premature infants. A secured NIH funding over five years has been awarded to study the role of SIGIRR gene in NEC. The Center for Infant Pulmonary Disorders is also housed within the Division and provides de-identified data repository looking into a wide range of issues affecting premature infants, including improving outcomes of infants with BPD, providing precise therapeutic intervention through neonatal pharmacology and pharmacogenomics. Through collaboration with the Center for Pediatric Genomic Medicine, the Division has performed whole-genome sequencing in critically-ill babies to diagnose genetic disorders quickly allowing for more targeted therapy. Many Division members provide leadership and collaboration in multicenter databases including VON, CHND, and BPD collaborative. Recently, the Children’s Research Institute at Children’s Mercy Kansas City was established to build on the hospital’s century-long history in pediatric research and to focus the hospital’s future research efforts in Pediatric Genomic Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology, Health Services and Outcomes, and Health Care Delivery.
