Under the general direction of the Medical Director, the Associate Medical Director (AMD) is responsible for assuring that issues affecting clinical practice are appropriately managed. In conjunction with active clinical practice, the AMD serves as a role model, performs effectively in a service environment, assumes responsibility for supervising Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners, and assures adequate staffing levels. The AMD participates on the Clinical Operations Management Team and, in conjunction with the Quality Management Director, assumes a leadership role in assuring quality and consistency of care at UC Santa Cruz Student Health Services (SHS). This position manages, plans for and responds to communicable disease outbreaks.

The Associate Medical Director attends to the medical needs of individuals presenting to SHS for assistance with Eating Disorders and Trans health care and serves as resource for other primary care providers caring for these individuals. The AMD is responsible for ensuring that trans and gender non-conforming students receive the highest quality care in a supportive, welcoming, respectful space. The Associate Medical Director aids the Medical Director in promoting and fostering continuity of care for those with chronic illness and effective collaboration with case managers, counselors and psychiatrists.

The Associate Medical Director represents Student Health Services and provides backup leadership and clinical coverage in the absence of the Medical Director.

College health provides a unique clinical experience for the physician. The opportunity to intervene in a young adult's development is often pivotal and gratifying.

Student Health Services (SHS) is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 - 5:30. SHS is not open in the evenings, on the weekends nor on holidays.

There are no on call hours.

UCSC Student Health Services (SHS) manages the health care needs of approximately 200 patients per day, is supported by an operating budget greater than 15 million dollars, and provides service to over 19,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

Student Health Services includes a primary care clinic, same day clinic, counseling, psychiatry, high complexity laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, optometry and billing and insurance as well as other administrative functions. SHS also encompasses SHOP, the Student Health Education, and Outreach and Prevention and CARE: Advocate Office for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Sexual Misconduct, the confidential advocacy support for survivors of sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking.

Qualifications include:

Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of physician and management duties at this level; advanced skills associated with the practice of medicine

Excellent skills in providing and managing the delivery of medical care services to a diverse client population

Professional knowledge of public health principles and practice including communicable disease contact investigation; specialized skills in communicable disease management

Experience providing primary care to patients with chronic conditions, mental health issues and co-morbid conditions

Willingness to learn and become proficient in medical management of individuals with Eating Disorders and Trans and Gender non-conforming concerns

Some special conditions include:

California Licensed MD or Doctor of Osteopathy, in good standing

Graduation from a class A accredited school of medicine with the degree of MD or Graduation from a class A accredited school of osteopathy with the degree of DO.

Current valid federal controlled substance registration (DEA certificate)

Must be Board Certified in Primary Care Specialty: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine

Selected Candidate will be required to pass a pre hire criminal history background check and a pre hire credentialing check; will be required to complete HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility) training within 30 days of hire; and will need to possess or obtain a Cardiopulmonary (CPR/ACLS) certificate within 90 days of hire.
