The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) and the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque, NM, invite applications for the position of Chief, Section of Gastroenterology at NMVAHCS. Three Staff Physician positions are also available.  The ideal candidate for the Chief is an accomplished physician with a strong background in clinical medicine as well as leadership experience in advancing clinical, educational and research missions. 

The ideal candidate for the staff physician position is a talented clinician with strong interest in teaching.  Expertise in advanced endoscopy including EUS or hepatology are particularly welcome. The Section of Gastroenterology is an integral component of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UNM with responsibility for teaching fellows, residents and medical students. 

  • The Section has a strong record of innovative, extramurally funded bench and clinical research. 
  • Specialized clinical programs within the Section include hepatobiliary endoscopy, motility and hepatology. 
  • The Chief will provide mentorship and serve as a role model of excellence in scholarship. 
  • The Chief will report to the Chief, Medicine Service. 
  • Professorial appointment will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments. 
  • Clinical activities span the breath of the subspecialty and is strongly supported by surgery, pathology and radiology. 
  • Compensation includes an excellent benefits package. Relocation/recruitment incentives and Educational Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) are authorized for this position. 

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, (May be required to work evenings or weekends as a 24/7 Full-Time Physician).

•Must be U.S. Citizen – Non-US Citizens may be considered

•Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.

•Board Certification in Gastroenterology preferred, but Board Eligibility may also be considered.  Board certification in Internal Medicine is also preferred.
