The Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University invites applications for the JD Irving Ltd. Chair in Occupational Medicine at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick, based in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.  The purpose of the Chair is to enhance the field of Occupational Health/Medicine throughout the Maritime Provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island) through the delivery of academic programs, research and leadership in the field of Occupational Health/Medicine.

Applicants must have one of the following:

a)  a PhD or equivalent

b)  an MD or equivalent, plus FRCPC certification in Occupational Medicine (or equivalent certification).

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record and/or potential in research excellence related to Occupational Health/Medicine, and will be expected to play a leadership role in spearheading collaborative research initiatives that span disciplines and sectors, including industry. The successful candidate will also create opportunities and drive strategic directions in one or more of the following areas: academic curriculum development and implementation, teaching, education and professional development. Key competencies required include excellent communication skills, collaboration and team development, research leadership skills in an interprofessional and multi-stakeholder environment and experience in maintaining successful partnerships.

The responsibilities of the Chair will include building research capacity in Occupational Health/Medicine and contributing to curricular and program development at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick.  There are opportunities for MD candidates to lead the development of occupational health programs and consultation services for clients in the Maritime Provinces, such as patients, clinicians, Worker’s Compensation Boards, government, academic institutions and industry and/or labor groups.  

The initial appointment will be for a five-year renewable term. The successful candidate will be appointed to an academic rank and department commensurate with qualifications and experience. 

This position will be based at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick (DMNB) in Saint John, NB.  DMNB delivers the Dalhousie four-year MD curriculum to 120 students who are based in New Brunswick, and 320 who are based in Halifax. DMNB is located on the Saint John campus of the University of New Brunswick (UNB), which offers additional opportunities for collaboration.
