Hiring: Fulltime Hepatologist.  The University of California, Davis School of Medicine and the VA Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS), jointly seek to hire a full time Hepatologist in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the Clinical X series.

The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine and the VA Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS), jointly seek to hire a full time Hepatologist in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the Clinical X series. Appointees to the Clinical X series are required to participate in teaching, university/public service, patient care/professional services, and creative work that can include bench, clinical, or translational research. The candidate will join an already established multidisciplinary group focused on taking care of a large cohort of patients with a variety of liver diseases. This is a 5/8 appointment at the VA and part-time appointment at UC Davis Health.

The position will be primarily dedicated to providing outstanding patient care and developing a program in clinical/translational research. A research focus in the area of hepatitis B or liver cancer is preferred. The candidate will be expected to participate in the care of the large and diverse patient population which the UC Davis Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology serves. The candidate will also be expected to perform endoscopic procedures.

Research opportunities include a CTSA-funded Clinical and Translational Sciences Center which provides bioinformatics and biostatistical support including access to over 12 million patient records in UC-Rex; a GI Clinical Trials Unit to support investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials; and multiple opportunities for translational research in microbiome, genetics, nutrition, and immunity. The Division’s training program includes 9 Gastroenterology fellows and 1 EUS fellow.

The 5/8 FTE at the VANCHCS will serve as a physician champion in the Gastroenterology/Hepatology Division, which serves a broad geographic region of Northern California from the East Bay to the Greater Sacramento Region and north to the Oregon border, operating a 100-bed hospital and medical center complex, 10 outlying clinics, and a community living center with over 100 beds. The candidate will lead and participate in performance and quality improvement projects at VANCHCS and serve in a leadership role for the VANCHCS hepatology team, including a full time Nurse Practitioner,  Pharmacist and other hepatology staff,  ensuring a collaborative work environment, and excellence in patient care and outcomes. Responsibilities will include care of patients with all types of liver disease, as well as those who need, or have undergone liver transplantation.

A track record of excellence in clinical care and teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows, and a strong commitment to liver disease is required Demonstrated skill and experience in all aspects of patient-based research in liver disease is desired. Candidates with VA merit awards and/or NIH grants along with a track record of impressive academic commitment and recognition, or experience with health services or implementation research, are strongly encouraged to apply. The capacity to obtain external grant funding for programmatic activities is strongly preferred. The ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment is required.

Applicants must have M.D. degree, be Board Certified/Board eligible in Gastroenterology, and be eligible for medical licensure in the State of California. Candidates must have experience in endoscopy and clinical hepatology. Excellence in teaching is required. Rank will be commensurate with candidate’s qualifications and experience. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales. Candidates must have the ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment.
