Position Summary: The Senior Vice President, Certification Standards and Programs will oversee all aspects of the ABMS program of certification, including initial certification and continuing certification, incorporating education, assessment, research and standards for certification. Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer, this position has three major areas of responsibility:

  • Provide strategic leadership for the ongoing evolution and implementation of effective standards and programming for initial and continuing certification;
  • Serve as a catalyst to advance the mutual goals of improved certification standards and methods as well as related physician education, training and assessment, and ultimately, of advancing quality of care;
  • Represent ABMS as the primary medical expert to a variety of agencies, organizations, media outlets, and the general public concerning the processes of board certification and the policies of the ABMS and its Member Boards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Collaborates with Board leadership and staff to advance the strategic goals of ABMS and the Member Boards Community.
  • Oversees the work of the Certifications Standards and Programs team and its programs, services, policies, and committees in support of the programs of initial and continuing certification.
  • Responsible for the implementation of recommendations from the Continuing Board Certification: Vision for the Future Commission, working with Member Board leadership to create consistent, sustainable and high value continuing certification standards and programming.
  • Collaborates on the expansion and exploration of ABMS International programs.
  • Assists Member Boards as needed in developing and implementing certification applications and other policy proposals.
  • Develops and implements projects that enhance professional knowledge and support the ABMS mission as it relates to certification.
  • In conjunction with the ABMS Executive Leadership Team, assists in the development and content of educational meetings, symposiums and conferences.
  • Participates actively with the executive leadership and other management teams and is knowledgeable about operations, budget preparation, publications, data management and related services, and research and education components of the organization.
  • Serves as ABMS staff lead to the Committee on Certification, Recertification and Sub-certification (COCERT), the Continuing Certification Committee (3C), the Ethics and Professionalism Committee (EPCOM) and other committees as designated by the President and Chief Executive Officer.
  • Serves as staff liaison to key stakeholders including the Accreditation Council for
  • Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME)
  • Participates as an ABMS observer or representative in national meetings of other medical organizations and agencies.
  • Represents the President and Chief Executive Officer when necessary.
  • Contributes to ABMS’ public footprint through professional publications and external presentations.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities assigned by the President and Chief Executive Officer as appropriate.
  • Moderate travel is required.

  • Demonstrated and significant experience in medical education, assessment and leadership roles.
     

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • M.D. or D.O. degree; board certification in one of the primary specialties approved by the ABMS;
  • At least 10 years of administrative experience in medicine with progressive leadership responsibilities at the department or division level in a medical school, hospital or managed care setting;
  • Experience working with national organizations in staff positions or as an active volunteer or elected officer of an organization.
