The Chief of the Anesthesiology Service leads a group of over 50 faculty anesthesiologists and over 125 nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) responsible for the administration of all forms of anesthesia for both inpatient and outpatient procedures in 65 anesthetizing locations. In 2018, the service performed over 50,000 anesthetics to include patients who are receiving treatments in the main Memorial Hospital operating rooms, the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, the Center for Image-Guided Intervention both at Memorial Hospital as well as at the new  74th Street location, endoscopy suites, and the Pediatric Day Hospital, as well as patients receiving radiation oncology, ophthalmology, and radiology services. Additionally, members of the service play an active role in the preoperative preparation of patients undergoing procedures.

The Chief of the Anesthesiology Service works directly under the guidance of the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Gregory Fischer. In addition, the Chief of the Anesthesiology Service serves on the Department’s senior leadership team along with the Chief of the Josie Robertson Anesthesia Service, the Critical Care Service, the Anesthesia Pain Service and the Director of CRNA Services. The Chief of the Anesthesiology Service will work closely with leaders from the Departments of Surgery and Nursing to manage activities in the operating rooms, the Surgical Day Hospital, and remote anesthetizing locations.

The new Chief of the Anesthesiology service will:
•   Oversee patient care and the professional performance of all clinicians delivering anesthesia services.
•   Possess strong technical skills and provide consultation and support to colleagues and other services when requested and in emergencies.
•   Promote standards of care to ensure consistent quality and patient experience across MSK’s inpatient and outpatient surgical and non-surgical sites including our growing network facilities.
•   Ensure that departmental staff members provide services that are compliant with all applicable moral and ethical standards.
•   Set and promote achievement of targets for continuous assessment and improvement of quality of care and services and initiate action for necessary improvements.
•   Ensure that there is strong support for the teaching program within the service and an effective learning environment for students, residents, fellows, and faculty alike.
•   Support comprehensive faculty development for all categories and faculty ranks and provide opportunities for junior faculty to advance on the promotion track.
•   Maintain a strong commitment to expanding inter-professional education and supporting diversity within the trainees, the faculty, and the leadership.
•   Be comfortable delegating tasks to other members of the service and providing growth opportunities for junior faculty.
