The Bedford VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for a Geriatrician-Educator. The position is located in the Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC) service of the ENRM Bedford VA Medical Center in Bedford, Massachusetts, the largest long-term care facility in the Veteran’s system. With an interprofessional approach and in collaboration with the Primary Care, Mental Health, and Home Based Primary Care services, the GEC service is responsible for the care of Veterans in a broad based geriatric program. The range of clinical responsibilities includes subacute, rehabilitation, long-term, dementia, hospice and geropsychiatric care.

The physician will help actively expand the depth and breadth of training programs at Bedford as Geriatrics-Internal Medicine graduate medical education site director (SD). The site director will be responsible for competency-based curricular innovation, implementation, assessment, and oversight relating to the clinical and academic experiences at the Bedford VA of geriatrics fellows and internal medicine trainees. The position will include direct teaching/facilitation of educational and scholarly activities.  The SD will work closely with the program director(s) of affiliated residencie(s) and clinical section chiefs at the Bedford VA to ensure that core curricular objectives are met. The SD will be a core member of a new health professions education team tasked with developing health professions education throughout the institution. The SD will spend 8-12 hours per week in these activities.  Remaining time will be spent on other clinical and academic activities depending on experience. 

The physician will be a geriatrician with experience in health professions education.  Family Medicine-trained clinicians are welcome to apply. Formal training in health professions education is preferred but is not required; at a minimum the applicant should have 2 or more years of experience in graduate medical education and look forward to further professional development. Appointment to the SD position will be for a 2-year, renewable term. Academic appointments will be available through Boston University.

The Bedford VA currently has approximately 20 FTEE residency positions composed of trainees in geriatrics, psychiatry, family medicine, internal medicine and preventive medicine.  Core clinical experiences at the Bedford VA relate to geriatrics and psychiatry. Further expansion is anticipated. Additionally, the institution has large training programs in psychology and social work that emphasize interprofessional approaches to mental health care.
