WVU School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Section of Hematology and Oncology seeks board-certified Internal or Family Medicine physicians with additional eligibility or certification in hospice and palliative care medicine to work as a part of a multidisciplinary team caring for patients with hematologic and oncologic illnesses in the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, a part of the WVU Cancer Institute. Pursue your academic goals through educating future physicians and participating in clinical research projects. Successful candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD or DO degree (the employer accepts foreign educational equivalent) and be eligible to obtain an unrestricted West Virginia medical license.  Candidates must have completed an accredited internal medicine or family medicine residency program as well as a fellowship in hospice and palliative care medicine at the time of appointment.  Faculty rank and salary will be commensurate with credentials.  Responsibilities will include providing excellent patient care as well as teaching medical students and internal medicine residents.  Opportunities exist to participate in clinical and translational research.

Our well-established and growing interdisciplinary Palliative and Supportive Care Service makes an extraordinary difference in the lives of patients not only locally, but across our entire state and region. The WVU Medicine Palliative and Supportive Care Service provides statewide leadership to the West Virginia Center for End-of-Life Care, the West Virginia Physician Orders for Scope of Treatment (POST) program, and the West Virginia e-Directive Registry. West Virginia’s innovative system for palliative and supportive care is considered a national model. This position provides an opportunity for significant involvement with these programs as well as for the development of a 21 bed freestanding inpatient unit, currently in design, that is a joint venture between the Washington based Capital Caring program and WVU. The unit will serve as the base for both inpatient and outpatient care as well as becoming an incubator for the development of innovative programs for end of life care in a rural environment. The majority of your patient care responsibilities are on the outpatient oncology service, and with less than 25% of time expected to be inpatient work either in WVU Hospital or in the inpatient hospice setting.

WVU Medicine is West Virginia University’s affiliated health system, West Virginia’s largest private employer, and a national leader in patient safety and quality. WVU Medicine includes the physicians, specialists, and sub-specialists of the West Virginia University School of Medicine; four community hospitals; three critical access hospitals; and a children’s hospital, all anchored by a 645-bed academic medical center that offers tertiary and quaternary care. WVU Medicine has more than 1,000 active medical staff members and 15,000 employees who serve hundreds of thousands of people each year from across the state of West Virginia and the nation.
