Duties

The VA Northern California VA Health Care System (VA NCHCS) is seeking a Chief of Medicine (COM) to join the Chief of Staff and the Executive Leadership team in leading the Health Care System in fulfilling its mission as a leader in Veteran’s health care.  The COM will be organized and dynamic, with the responsibility for overseeing the planning, developing, coordinating, directing, and evaluating the Medical inpatient and subspecialty services for a large and complex VA health care system.  

Acute inpatient services, including an emergency department are located at the main campus at the Sacramento VA Medical Center in Mather, California. A 120-bed community living center (CLC) is located at the Martinez campus. We also offer a continuum of outpatient Medical subspecialty services. Services include: Allergy, Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Disease/Infection Prevention, Nephrology, Home Based Primary Care, Hospital Medicine, Palliative Medicine, Pulmonology/Critical Care, Rheumatology and Sleep Medicine. Medical Service has over 190 employees at 10 geographically dispersed locations throughout Northern California. 

We are affiliated with the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis Health (UCDH). The selected candidate will supervise and teach UC Davis residents and medical students on the UC Davis Medical School campus and will receive an academic appointment at a level commensurate with their academic accomplishments and experience. The COM will also work with UC Davis teaching faculty to expand existing educational rotations for medical students and residents and will help develop new rotations within the VA Northern California HCS.   

Qualified candidates will be seasoned clinicians who demonstrate extensive and progressive leadership experience, both as a clinician and an administrator and possess the ability to promote innovation, inspire organizational excellence, be able to build teams, and coach clinical leaders as they work toward common goals.  Exceptional interpersonal skills, as well as operational and financial skills are essential.  The successful candidate must have the ability to meet VA established performance measure goals, and possess a thorough knowledge of the standards of the Veterans Health Administration and other accrediting bodies.  The COM should possess the ability to promote innovation and lean management, be able to lead others and inspire organizational excellence.
