The University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia is seeking qualified anesthesiologists with interest and expertise in a variety of clinical areas to join our team. Opportunities are available in general anesthesia and several subspecialties, including Ambulatory, Cardiovascular/ Thoracic, Neurosurgical, Obstetrical, Pediatric, Pediatric Cardiac, and Regional and Acute Pain Medicine. Department leadership positions also are available for highly qualified individuals.

About Us

The UI Department of Anesthesia has its roots in the first formal anesthesiology residency program to be established at an American university. Today, the Department boasts more than 80 faculty members, 57 residents, and 12 fellows who provide clinical anesthesia  services for more than 50 operating rooms at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics,  as well as procedural anesthesia services for Pediatrics, Radiology, and nearly 20 other surgical and non-surgical clinics and specialty suites. This broad range of services places  the Department in the 99th percentile for diversity of surgical cases among U.S. hospitals.

Departmental faculty serve on editorial boards of major anesthesiology journals, provide refresher courses for the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting, and  serve as board examiners for the American Board of Anesthesiology. Department  researchers are funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and non-governmental organizations. The Department has an extensive and well-organized mentoring program for junior faculty and is proud of its tradition of providing a wide range of career development opportunities.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must show successful completion of an accredited residency  program in anesthesiology. Candidates must also hold an MD, DO, or equivalent degree and be eligible for licensure in Iowa. Candidates must be board-certified (or eligible) in anesthesiology. Anesthesiologist’s Role 

  • Participating in team-based anesthesia care and personally providing anesthesia care
  • Serving as a member of an interdisciplinary team, collaborating for effective patient outcomes
  • Active participation in the academic activities of the Department and College of Medicine 
  • Supervising students, residents, fellows, SRNAs, and non-anesthesia rotators 
  • Providing developmental feedback to those under supervision, verbally and in writing
  • Preparing educational materials, leading and/or attending academic lectures and professional development events
  • Demonstrating commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive team-based work environment.

Research activities are encouraged, though participation is not required for continued employment or promotion.
