Definition of Position:

The Pathologist, Medical Director is responsible for the oversight of the technical and scientific operations of the Laboratory.  The Pathologist, Medical Director monitors the performance of all technical and professional staff (pathologists), reporting to the executive committee of DHS.

Primary Performance Requirements:

  • Completed Pathologist Orientation Checklist within first 6 months of employment
  • Behaves in a manner consistent with ethical and professional standards of the American Medical Association and DHS. Includes individual accountability, acting with honesty and respect towards one’s colleagues, coworkers and clients and showing a strong sense of teamwork
  • Supervises and assigns duties to all members of the Laboratory
  • Provides a consultative report for each assigned surgical specimen
  • Signs, either electronically or manually all computerized anatomic pathology cases in a timely fashion
  • Renders reports needing the immediate attention of the attending physician directly to the physician before a written report is made
  • Maintains competency, as documented on proficiency testing and on internal and external reviews
  • Participates in Quality Assurance activities of the department
  • Participates in DHS proficiency testing, CME and teaching conferences
  • Participates in general CME at a level sufficient to satisfy state licensing requirements
  • Completes the annual self-assessment and Goals Form in a timely fashion and satisfies all the requirements therein
  • Accountable for all professional, administrative and quality assurance activities within the Laboratory including supervision of the grossing assistant
  • Maintains continuing review of the professional performance of all practioners with anatomic pathology privileges in the Laboratory
  • Responsible for the adoption and maintenance of laboratory standards for all active accrediting agencies
  • Participates in establishing laboratory budget and be responsible for striving to maximize laboratory efficiency
  • Represents the Laboratory in all of the following areas; giving guidance on overall laboratory needs and services and communicating recommendations and policies back to the Department
    • In interactions with DHS executive committee and management team
    • In interactions with laboratory accrediting agencies including JCAHO, State of North Carolina, and the College of American Pathologists
  • Sets goals for the Laboratory in consultation with all professional and technical staff members and guises laboratory employees in setting personal goals
  • Conducts reviews of all new employees within 6 months of employment and at least annually thereafter
  • Transmits to DHS Executive Committee recommendation for the Laboratory concerning departmental and individual goals, results of performance evaluations, and recommendations for staff classifications, reappointment and delineation of privileges
  • Takes corrective action as necessary to ensure quality monitoring and that professional satisfy all performance requirements and guidelines

Job Eligibility Requirements:

  • Completion of Medical School and a Residency 
  • Currently licensed in the State of North Carolina and Board Certification
  • Certified by the American Board of Pathologists in Anatomic Pathology
  • Must satisfy all credentialing requirements and CLIA-88 requirements for Technical Supervisor
  • Must be tested for visual color discrimination on initial employment or provide evidence of prior testing
  • Must be tested for competency before starting grossing of patient specimens and must be evaluated at least annually for continuing proficiency
  • Strong organizations skills and attention to detail
  • Maintains required CME
  • Dexterity and ability to work with hands and operate tools and equipment
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and professionally. Ability to read, write and speak English
