SUNY Downstate Medical Center, in partnership with Korn Ferry, announces a national search for the Dean, College of Medicine.

For over 150 years, the College of Medicine at State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center (“Downstate”) has been a critically important institution in the state of New York.  Downstate has trained more physicians for the state than any other medical college.  Located in the heart of Brooklyn, Downstate is the only academic medical center for research, health education, community service, and patient care serving its 2.6 million residents.  From the beginning, it has been an exemplary organization with a rich history across the Colleges of Medicine, of Nursing and of Health Related Professions, Schools of Graduate Studies and Public Health, and University Hospital of Brooklyn.

Today, Downstate has entered a period of renewed growth and expansion, one that reflects a rapidly changing environment.  Led by its new President, Wayne Riley, MD, MPH, MBA, MACP, Downstate is undertaking wide-ranging changes to ensure that it continues its success in all its missions for future generations.  A critical success factor for the College of Medicine in expanding these changes is the recruitment of a dynamic, academic leader to serve as Dean in the new era.  A national search is underway to recruit such an individual.

To provide the necessary leadership for the College in this transformative period, Downstate seeks a strong physician leader who has a deep understanding of health care market forces and demonstrates creative strategic thinking about how a public medical school can thrive in this rapidly evolving environment.  The Dean must demonstrate passion for the educational and clinical missions.  The next Dean will inherit a clinical enterprise rich in history and eager to expand the depth and scope of its diverse programs.  Importantly, the next Dean must work effectively with the leadership, as well as the faculty and staff of the College of Medicine to develop an energizing vision for the organization, one that brings greater visibility to the institution and expands throughout the medical center to integrate the educational, clinical, and research missions.  Ideally, the new Dean will have prior experience working in a healthcare setting demonstrating a sensitivity and understanding of addressing the issues facing underserved minority populations.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a record of scholarly activity with national and/or international recognition and leadership in academia as a physician leader and educator, and will have had operational and financial management experience in a hospital, academic health center, or group practice environment.  The successful candidate will be an advocate for the faculty and students and committed to mentoring and training the next generation of physicians and physician-scientists.  The next dean must be committed to fostering the enrollment of underrepresented minorities in the College of Medicine.  Also, they must be committed to fostering underrepresented minorities and women in the faculty and staff of the College of Medicine.

Korn Ferry is assisting Downstate with this important recruitment.  Please forward, as soon as possible, applications or nominations of appropriate candidates to:
