Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologist (Atlanta Georgia)

The Atlanta, GA VA Medical Center is searching for a BC/BE Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologist to join their dynamic healthcare team.

  • Fellowship trained cardiac anesthesiologists will be interested in an academic appointment that incorporates training and research along with clinical duties. 
  • The Chief will be responsible for development of protocols for all cardiac and thoracic anesthesia cases and will collaborate with the Chief of Critical Care and Cardiothoracic Surgery to ensure excellent care and transitions from the OR to the ICU.
  • Management of protocols for cardiac anesthesiology.  Management of fee basis providers when the Chief is not available. Training of OR call staff for proficiency in emergent return to OR situations. 
  • Development of relationship with Emory Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Critical Care Fellowship.  There are multiple opportunities for research and its encouraged.

Mandatory Qualifications:

  • Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology or similar experience with TEE 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Board Certification in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology/TEE

  • Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when no qualified citizens are available


  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. 

Licensure: At the time of appointment current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Location Overveiw: 

The Atlanta VA Medical Center is located at 1670 Clairmont Road in Decatur, Georgia. The medical center oversees seven VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Smyrna (Cobb County); Lawrenceville (Gwinnett County); Oakwood (Hall County); East Point (South Fulton County), Stockbridge (Henry County)  and Newnan (Coweta County) and Blairsville (Union County) in addition to an outpatient clinic in Decatur and an outreach clinic in Rome, Georgia.

 The Atlanta VAMC has a highly active research program which is near the top ten in the nation and is largely conducted by VA physician-scientists who are also faculty members at Emory University School of Medicine. The program is fortunate to include one of the national VA Rehabilitation Research Centers of Excellence, a growing HSR&D program, and research programs focused on medical and clinical problems, rehabilitation medicine and engineering, as well as health services and outcomes research.

The research program involves over 500 projects conducted by 140 principal research investigators with more than 300 research associates and staff. These research projects cover a broad range of subjects, including bacterial infection, diabetes; development of new anti-HIV and -HBV (hepatitis) agents; low vision devices and aids, low vision and disequilibrium in the elderly; engineering and environmental design of facilities; genetics and regulation of bone growth and remodeling; developing gene therapy for diabetes; hormone action; kidney mechanisms of hypertension; growth factor interactions in lung development and disease; the genetics of cancer; control of blood vessel contraction; drug addiction, clinical anxiety and mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, disorders of memory and cognition, and clinical management problems in hypertension, oncology, gastroenterology, and pulmonary medicine.
