Position Description:

Reporting to the PPMC Chief Medical Officer, the Medical Director, Patient Progression, will partner with key clinical, Nursing, and other department leaders to promote care that is safe, effective, efficient, and timely. This hospital leadership role will be responsible for establishing, implementing, and monitoring key processes supporting patient progression, utilization management, and readmission reduction. The role will require real-time interaction with clinical teams and other departments to insure reliable execution of these processes.

Roles and responsibilities: 

In partnership with the Director (RN Leader) of Patient Progression, the Medical Director of Patient Progression will:

  • Work with the clinical departments to establish algorithms that enable the most appropriate patient team assignments, including level of care, service, and location. Actively monitor, evaluate and amend these algorithms, as necessary, in support of safe, effective, efficient and timely patient care.
  • Work with the clinical and nursing departments to bring flexibility within the established algorithms during critical census events to accelerate patient flow.
  • Participate in day-to-day efforts to apply these algorithms, provide real-time provider education, and, when necessary, adjudicate differences between services. Such participation will include attending bed management meetings, huddles, and, as needed, selected clinical team rounds and care coordination rounds. In effect, act in an “Air traffic control” role with utilization review, case management support, and patient placement and flow decisions.
  • Develop management tools, including service-specific data sets and dashboards to support progression efforts.  Disseminate and review with clinical and department leaders.
  • Serve as physician leader on key implementation and performance improvement projects in support of patient progression.  Manage a portfolio of such ongoing projects.
  • Lead operational teams, committees and workgroups, as needed.
  • Keep abreast of external innovation and best practices in the Patient Progression arena and bring relevant ideas to PPMC.

Clinical Time:     Approximately 7 weeks of inpatient clinical service annually, most likely on the general internal medicine hospitalist service.


  • Board certified in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine or Emergency Medicine
  • Current state licensure
  • DEA
