I’m Dr. Vivian Ayoub, Market Chief Medical Officer of CenterWell Senior Primary Care in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley and its sister brand, Conviva Care Center, in San Antonio. In my organization, we are dedicated to setting the standard in senior-focused primary care through a value-based care model that puts an emphasis on quality patient interactions and comprehensive team-based approaches. Having worked in the primary care space for more than a decade, I’m fortunate to work for an organization that truly prioritizes patient outcomes and my goals as a physician leader.
Dr. Vivian Ayoub, Market Chief Medical Officer of CenterWell Senior Primary Care in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley and its sister brand, Conviva Care Center, in San Antonio.
Since joining CenterWell and Conviva, I have learned from various continuing education and mentorship resources that help enhance my expertise, enabling me to stay up to date with the latest medical advancements, provide the highest quality of care and achieve professional growth. By combining the operational strengths and mission-driven care of my organization with the advanced practical knowledge I receive, I am well-prepared for professional success. This expertise directly benefits patients by enhancing the quality of care they receive.
Operational Efficiencies are Key to Professional Growth
In our value-based care model, physicians have access to smaller, more manageable patient panels and extended time with patients – in fact, our doctors meet with patients for up to 50% longer than in a traditional practice. This allows physicians extra time in their day to review patient charts, meet with their care teams and have downtime between seeing patients. I prefer to use this time to review new case studies or research papers that might benefit my knowledge as a physician and, in turn, the patients whom I treat.
I’m also fortunate that the team-based approach to care – which incorporates nurse practitioners, physicians, social workers, pharmacists, nurse care coordinators, and behavioral health specialists – surrounds me with highly-educated individuals with diverse skill sets who push each other to be the best providers possible. The care team approach helps contribute to better patient outcomes, such as fewer inpatient admissions, fewer ER visits and a lower average cost for care, and has proven equally beneficial to my success as a physician.
Unparalleled Professional Development
While my medical school training and residency specializing in internal medicine prepared me to address complex medical conditions, including for older adults, my time with CenterWell and Conviva has refined my knowledge of senior care and helped expand on my medical training.
To ensure that education is integrated into the workday, we invest in Continuing Medical Education (CME) time during clinic hours, with schedules blocked every other month for learning new technologies, advanced care delivery methods and refreshers for skills. For those seeking educational opportunities outside of working hours, there is a monetary allowance offered to reimburse for time dedicated to advancing practical skills.
Beyond continuing education classes, CenterWell and Conviva invest in training providers to become physician leaders, offering leadership-specific courses to help clinicians develop business acumen and managerial skills. These resources have been invaluable in helping me achieve promotion to market chief medical officer, where I work in conjunction with the associate medical directors to motivate clinicians and provide medical direction in pursuit of quality health care to seniors in San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley.
Mentorship Makes a Difference
The mentorship I have received throughout my career was also crucial in reaching my potential as a physician and a leader. At CenterWell and Conviva, we have developed a “Provider Learning Journey” to onboard new clinicians, providing opportunities for them to choose to be mentors, have mentors, or both.
Two new hires recently expressed having never experienced an organization that invests so much time in onboarding and training. Perspectives such as these motivate me to equip our physicians with the same resources and experience that I had. I recognize that this success is not only their own, but also the success of those providers they lead, and the patients for whom they care.
Why I Love Where I Am
The combination of learning opportunities and mentorship within my organization has been instrumental in my professional development, offering critical insights and guidance that have shaped my career path. If you are looking for a rewarding career in health care, I highly recommend considering CenterWell and Conviva. Our workplace culture is focused on teamwork, offering exciting opportunities to grow your career, and cultivating a positive and welcoming environment for all.
