Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Emergency Medicine is in search of a Vice Chair for Research and Scholarship

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) seeks a visionary and highly-motivated researcher to join the Department as an Associate or Full Professor for the position of Vice Chair for Research and Scholarship.

The Vice Chair will report directly to the System Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and be responsible for the development and implementation of strategic plans for the research mission of the Department in conjunction with Department Chair - with a focus on increasing extramural funding and the number and quality of departmental peer-reviewed publications and presentations. The major criteria for appointment for this position shall be demonstrated excellence in independent, extramurally-funded, investigative research, teaching, and leadership, that advances clinical medicine.

Our Department maintains a thriving clinical practice including: Froedtert and MCW Froedtert Hospital Emergency Department (level 1 adult trauma center); Children's Hospital of Wisconsin (level 1 pediatric trauma center); Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center Emergency Department; Froedtert and MCW Moorland Reserve Health Center (free-standing) Emergency Department; and a series of soon-to-opened, community-based, neighborhood hospital Emergency Departments. Across this myriad of clinical practices, our faculty, fellows, residents, and advanced practice providers (APPs) care for more than 170,000 patient visits each year. Our Department is home to a competitive training program of 30 residents, which attracts top-notch housestaff from medical schools across the nation. Many of our faculty members, fellows, residents, APPs, and staff in the Department are engaged in a host of extramurally-funded, cutting-edge, investigative research. Inquiry in the areas of cardiac arrest and resuscitation, injury, EMS, and others have garnered MCW a reputation as an Emergency Medicine research powerhouse. In fact, MCW is a top National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded, academic Department of Emergency Medicine - helping to catapult us to the forefront of discovery in acute care.

Successful applicants will possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D. as well as the qualifications to be appointed as Associate Professor or Professor on a tenure-earning track. Preference will be given to candidates possessing an active, portable portfolio of extramurally-funded research.

Desired qualities and skills include a track record of successfully managing research teams and resources. Other desirable qualities include: ethical conduct; professionalism; clear communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and leadership and management abilities sufficient to effectively lead and develop investigators and support staff. The candidate should have prior experience with budgetary oversight and grant administration. The candidate should have the ability to create and execute a strategic vision, provide guidance, and stimulate research endeavors in the Department of Emergency Medicine, while at the same time maintaining an active, extramurally-funded research portfolio.
