In 2018, Drexel University College of Medicine and Tower Health announced plans to jointly develop a regional medical campus in West Reading, Pennsylvania near the campus of Reading Hospital. The regional campus will provide all four years of instruction leading to the MD degree and will be operational for the 2020 – 2021 academic year. We are now recruiting for multiple faculty and staff level positions to support the operation of the new campus.

Today, with more than 1,000 medical students, Drexel University College of Medicine is educating 1 in every 83 medical students in the nation. Graduate students number more than 800, and the College is the academic partner in the education of more than 550 medical residents and fellows. There are 700 clinical and basic science faculty, and more than 1,700 affiliate and volunteer faculty. Tower Health is a regional, integrated healthcare system that offers leading-edge compassionate healthcare and wellness services to a population of 2.5 million people in southeastern Pennsylvania. Position Title: Faculty Lead, “Foundations of Patient Care” course, MD Curriculum

Job Overview: This part-time (0.5 FTE) 12-month educator position with expertise in Clinical Medicine will serve as the faculty lead for this course on the Tower Health campus of Drexel University College of Medicine. DUCOM’s Foundations and Frontiers curriculum prepares students to provide humanistic care to a diverse population as an integral member of a health care team. The 18-month Foundations phase includes multidisciplinary, integrated basic and clinical science courses that utilize a combination of technology enhanced instructional formats to deliver course content as well as in-class team-centered instructional activities that extend and apply knowledge to clinical problems. The course “Foundations of Patient Care” extends over the entirety of the 18-month Foundations phase and is a major platform for the acquisition of competencies in history and physical examination, principles of ethical decision making, biopsychosocial model of illness and professionalism formation. Candidates must demonstrate willingness to contribute to multidisciplinary medical instruction in small group, and large group settings and will also participate in small group Case Based Learning sessions.  

The position will be filled at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor commensurate with experience and accomplishments in medical teaching.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Work with an interdisciplinary team of basic science educators and clinical faculty to develop and implement basic science content in an innovative and integrated medical education curriculum
  • Prepare and develop online educational resources in conjunction with other basic science educators
  • Participate in and design different types of active learning sessions including team-based learning;
  • Identify, track and support students in academic difficulty within the course/thread;
  • Facilitate case-based learning;
  • Participate in mentoring and advising activities for medical students;
  • Maintain a scholarly focus in education.

Education and Experience:

  • MD/DO with expertise in Clinical Skills and Physician-Patient communication
  • At least five years’ experience teaching in a graduate or medical education setting with evidence of effective teaching
  • Demonstrated success in working well with faculty, administrators and students in an educational environment.
