THE SEARCH

The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Division of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Medicine seek a distinguished clinician/scientist to serve as the next Director of the Phase I Clinical Trials Unit. Reporting to the Director of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Division of Hematology and Oncology Director, appropriate candidates will also serve as the Albert F. LoBuglio Endowed Chair in Translational Research. The next Director will have a tremendous opportunity to lead the only dedicated Phase I program in the state of Alabama during at time of strategic growth at UAB.

The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) is a premier research entity, one of only two NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the Deep South, and the only one in a three-state area that includes Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The O’Neal CCC is especially regarded for its expertise in translational research. The Cancer Center currently offers patients access to more than 200 clinical trials, some of which feature drugs and therapies discovered at UAB and that are not available elsewhere. The distinctive Phase I program, established in 2015, enhances the University’s ability to conduct Phase I studies through a patient-centered approach in which a dedicated team is responsible for conducting first-in-human clinical trials.

The O’Neal CCC and UAB seeks an exceptional oncologist and leader with a track-record of Phase I research activity to catalyze the research of a world-class team of scientists in Phase I clinical trials. With a robust infrastructure in place to support clinical trials, the Director will be charged with developing a strategic vision for continued expansion of the unit, which currently supports more than 40 active trials with 30 staff. The Director will be a critical partner to leadership in the Division of Hematology and Oncology and the Cancer Center to promote a culture of transformative research and collaboration across all of UAB Medicine. The O’Neal CCC is poised for continued growth of protocols and patient participation.
